MSTA STATE DIRECTORS POSITION

OVERVIEW:

State, Co- and Area Directors are responsible for coordinating members within a given state or area via regular meetings and/or ride activities; set an example of skilled, safe riding; publicize and promote the MSTA and its events; serve as a contact for the Executive Committee; assist local members as needed; and also delegate assisting roles to local members.
TIPS
1)  You are not expected to do everything!  Enlist your local members to help!
2)  Build the loyalty of existing members by operating a club that works well and is FUN
3)  Give members the opportunity to say YES!  Don't be afraid to ask for help and input
from the members.  Many people are only waiting to be asked.

HOW-TO'S AND BEST PRACTICES

1) maintain contact with members through a regular newsletter, email list, web forum or
    Facebook page
2) manage local membership by encouraging member's renewal, serve as the
point of contact for members and prospective members....get cards, keep them with
you and pass them out to all members and prospective members
3) encourage membership to provide articles for the state newsletter, the STAReview,
and to participate on the local and national forums and FaceBook pages
4) establish a good ride calendar at the beginning of the year; which has ride destinations,
ride coordinators, and dates chosen all listed
5) if possible, arrive early and socialize, also do a pre-ride briefing on the ride plan
6) treat all members as potential officers, because they are
7) call or email members you haven't seen or heard from in awhile
8) encourage all members to be friendly and recruit for the club.  ask all members to carry
Invitation to Ride pamphlets with them and pass them out to prospective members.
9) ask all members to recycle their old copies of the STAReview by dropping them off
wherever they think people may read them....motorcycle dealer waiting areas, car
service waiting area, barbershops, doctors waiting rooms, etc.  You never know where
another motorcycle rider may pick up a copy and be inspired to join
10) develop a relationship with local dealers....can be done when dropping off a copy of
the STAReview or your local newsletter
11) get to know as many of your members as you can
12) welcome and introduce new members at your monthly meeting
13) ask members to invite friends to local meetings and rides
14) be open to cross promotion with other motorcycle groups in the area
15) promote Just for Fun and sanctioned MSTA events to your members

PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE ARE ONLY SOME OF THE THINGS THAT MANY HAVE  FOUND WORK FOR THEM.  NETWORKING WITH OTHER STATE DIRECTORS VIA FACE TO FACE, EMAIL, AND PHONE IS A GREAT WAY TO SHARE INFORMATION. YOU SHOULD NOT EXPECT THAT YOU WILL HAVE THE TIME OR ENERGY TO DO ALL OF THESE THINGS, AND NOBODY IS SAYING THAT YOU MUST.  DO WHAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING AND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.  ABOVE ALL, HAVE FUN!  MAKE THE CLUB EXPERIENCE  ENJOYABLE FOR THE MEMBERS AND FOR YOU AND WE WILL BE JUST FINE.

If I can be of ANY assistance to you, or if you have any questions or thoughts, PLEASE contact me.
