When I was in the service the only gear we had were the basic fatigues. Carrying heavy gear, slings with M-14 or M-60 machine guns plus packs sat heavily on our shoulders. There was no high tech clothing and you sweated profusely in warm or cold environments. Current technology has changed greatly providing the soldier additional protection in combat situations. When we ride our motorcycles we can relate to a high stress military situation. While there are no bullets and IEDs to dodge, high speed road debris and vehicle crashes cause injuries.
Potomac Field Gear is a leader in Advance Protective Fabric (APF) warrior gear that can also benefit motorcycle riders. This product is American made product in South West Virginia. I first saw them at the Southwest Police Motorcycle competition in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were there because their gear meets, or exceeds, police and fire department requirements. I was sent several pieces of body gear to test and I was very impressed. This gear can be used while riding or participating in other outdoor activity.
There are key advantages to this product line. The garment is fire resistant and will self-extinguish once the source is removed. More importantly the material will not melt or drip when ignited as shown in this burn test video. It has Berry Amendment, US Army, US Air Force and US Marine certification. This APF scored a very high 1855 on Moisture Vapor transfer rate testing. The X-Static technology reduces the wearer’s body odor destroying a harmful bacteria like Corynebaterium Diphtheriae, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Kiebsiella Pneumoniae and Staphylococcus Aureus. This protection is for the life of the garment. The fabric has anti-static properties and can take a 5000 volt charge and decay to 500 volts in 0.1 seconds, desirable attributes around fuel-rich environments and electronics. The fabric also protects against UV radiation exposure.
I had four upper garment products to test: the skull cap, short sleeve shirt, the short sleeve tactical shirt, and the Advance Combat Shirt Gen II. The skull cap comes in multiple weights and is very comfortable to wear alone, wet or dry under the helmet. The short sleeve shirt is made of the same AFP material with all the above capabilities. It is a lightweight replacement for a t-shirt with all the protection normal clothing does not provide.
The Tactical Shirt is worn under concealment or tactical body armor or protective riding gear. The spacer inserts provide better back pack or riding gear load protection, and enhanced thermal regulation allowing you to remove perspiration faster and stay cooler. The spacer pads can act as additional protection against falls and abrasion reducing injuries.
The Advance Combat Shirt Gen II is a full jacket with collar and has fire resistant spacer inserts. This is the next step in reduced fatigue when carrying a backpack, enhanced thermal regulation in the summer or winter, and trauma during crashes as shown in this video. This product is pulled over your head but has a zipper that goes almost all the way down the jacket. It can be worn as a normal jacket for daily use as it has zippered pockets on the sleeves, and a place to put uniform patches. The three combined products are a system that gives you enhanced comfort in all weather climates in addition to trauma protection and protection from the medical ailments mentioned above. I used them while riding and found they were very comfortable and worked as advertised. Any product that can enhance your safety is worth the purchase price.
The Potomac product line also features long sleeve shirts, bottoms, Balaclava, neck gator, blast shorts and skull caps in light weight, mid weight, fleece, and combat gear categories. Woman also have a sports bra and boy short available. They offer discounts to armed forces and government agencies. The size chart covers tops, bottoms, and short for men and woman. There is also a chart for woman’s bras. They provide their customers with a repair, replacement or refund guarantee.
This is a very high quality product line that provides the best in protection for the rider. It can be worn as light weight protective gear, as well as additional under garments, providing you additional trauma, temperature, and bacterial protection not found in other products.
