Fun idea!  Nice write-up!

FYI-which you probably already know-if you use Basecamp, you can instantly change your "route" to "track".  If you have a newer GPS, select follow track, and you can follow the track and not have confusion about which direction to next destination.
After re-thinking your navigation issue, I suggest turning off "recalculate" setting on your GPS, and follow the route.

Even with recalculate off, when you have a route that crosses itself, it can get confused about which part of the cross you are on or want to be on at this point in time, and jump you to the wrong part of the route.

And some of our towns did not show up in the GPS database when searching by name.

BUT... all of that made it more of a challenge, and therefore a better story.

My old StreetPilot does just fine with route crossing, but the newer models seem to be a LOT pickier about such things. I'm going to try to keep the old stuff going as long as possible, but I'm that way about my bikes too. I have several bikes with around 100,000 miles on them, one with about 150,000, and one with over 200,000.
