With great sadness I report that Curt Chevlen has died. I am told that Curt was driving home on Thanksgiving evening, not feeling well, when he was involved in a car crash. His wife who was also in the car is reportedly uninjured. I have not been informed of a cause of death at this time. I'll report anything further when I hear it. A memorial service may happen in the coming week.
As you may recall, Curt was badly injured when his motor scooter collided with a left-turning SUV in the summer of 2018. While in the hospital he learned of the death of his good friend John Romine of Indiana, who had also been in a motorcycle crash. Curt decided to quit riding. He seemed to recover rapidly from very serious injuries, but lingering effects were still worrisome. On Veterans Day he drove sweep in his Miata as a few of us rode to lunch in the cold. He said it was fun and I hoped that would mean he'd ride with us often in the future just as Tom Rannebarger had.
Curt was a frequent attendee of MSTA events, often seen in the company of Romine, Howard Baumwell and Dave Brickner. I most recently saw him at our Columbus area happy hour. He was laughing and making wise cracks as always. He brought me a box of leftover bits from the FJ-09 I bought from him when he gave up riding. He seemed optimistic.
When i have more information I will pass it along.
