This photo got me...
« on: December 27, 2018, 08:56:04 AM »

I was looking through Motorcyclist magazine January/February 2019 issue. There on page 18 this photo just caught my eye. It shows William Dunlap in one of “Real” Road Racing’s many death defying situations. Taking a corner tight and fast enough to “trim” the hedges and touch an exhaust pipe down while ON a painted line! The image captures the flame of combustion on the painted line. Amazing riding and an exceptional photograph!
I was dumbfounded as I read below... in July William Dunlop lost his life in a practice session for the 2018 Skerries 100 Road Race.

Incredible photo of an incredible racer. Sad that we lost him last year.

The Skerries is (I figured and confirmed) a road race on public roads, not unlike the IOM and some other events like that in parts of Europe. Seems that many racers lose their lives or sustain serious crashes in these kind of races, for a multitude of reasons.

It is no wonder that most high level professional road racers (MotoGP) are banned from participating in these events by their contracts. Of course our own Nicky Hayden died riding a bicycle (with extenuating circumstances).
