New Google Maps tips?
« on: May 13, 2014, 10:51:34 am »
Hey all,

Has anyone worked much with the "new" Google Maps?  It has some nice features, such as avoidances (like Highways) in it's routing now, but it seems to have lost the ability to overlay points of interest one is searching for along the route (such as historical markers, parks, lodging or the most important brewpubs) as the old Google Maps could.

Any pointers or tips appreciated,

Bing doesn't seem capable either, and it's making some terrible route choices (loops, outta the ways, wtf is up with that!)

Has anyone been able to convert a route created in the new Google Maps to something Basecamp can import?

The old Google Maps had an export KML feature somewhere, but converting new to old looses the route options totally and would require manually recreating the route, which I might as well do by hand in BaseCamp if it comes to that.

What I've found is that you now have to use Google Earth to do many of the "mapping" functions that used to be available on Google Maps.  I was able to import .gpx and export .kml files from Google Earth, but couldn't find anything like this on the new Google Maps.
