AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days
« on: May 02, 2025, 03:16:49 PM »
Hello Everyone,
This looks like a great event to display your vintage bikes, or just to view the bikes on display.
I wish I was not busy that weekend to go view some of the old bikes from when I started riding, and maybe even take one of our old bikes.

That should be quite a show. I attended the AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) races at NOLA Motorsports a couple years ago and they had a nice show with some beautiful old bikes.

I’ve attended M-O Vintage Days more than a couple of dozen times over the last 25-30 years. Ridden there, worked there, camped there, and both bought and sold stuff in the swap meet. I know many many more people that have raced on and off roads bikes there. It’s a huge weekend long event. The most impressive thing the last few years has been the huge number of kids riding around on bikes. Literally hundreds of kids on pit bikes running around all day and much of the night. Truthfully they have become somewhat of a nuisance and a safety hazard. The last few years I’ve just driven up for the day as it’s only about 2 1/2 hours on the highway to get there or back. Just leave early and come back in the evening. I have worked the AMA booth a couple of times and have met many of the Grand Marshalls and former racers over the years too. Every year I say I’m not going back because I’m always worn out afterwards, and then the next year I’m back again. LOL

And, anybody that has never been to Mid Ohio, you are missing a great place. I have been to many race tracks across the nation and Canada when I crewed for an IMSA and SCCA race teams as well as over 10 years as a Race Official for SCCA Pro Racing. We always said that Mid Ohio is the neatest and cleanest track and has some of the most scenic areas for viewing, with tree shade. But, they always had the worse food.
For great food, go to Rd America, WI. Of course, Canadian Tire Motorsports near Toronto has the Poutine, the great French Canadian dish. That is the ultimate food anytime.
We luck out in Owatonna, MN, as a Canadian food wagon comes to our county fair to serve only Poutine. And the line is very long all day long.

M-O Vintage days is only rivaled by Barber MSP. Enough said there. Even the Indy Car announcers were raving about the grounds and museum on this mornings broadcast.
In the old days the HSTA/MSTA had a large presence at M-O.    TM

That is a place that I forgot about. Probably being I never worked at Barber MSP, but have visited several times through the years for other events. The museum is the best part of that place. It is called the World's Largest Cycle Museum. And, most cycles have very low mileage. The story that we were told, is every time a new model came out, George Barber would have it put in storage, and eventually he built the track and museum which has been added onto a few times. Also, we were told that George owned several cycle dealerships, so he could just have a new model taken out of the crate and put in storage.
Several years ago, we visited not only the museum, but in Birmingham the factory when they were building Motus cycles. Now closed as of 2018.

There are many great places to visit that have the history of cycles, and cars that if we tried to visit all of them, it would take more than a Life Time.
Guess I better start visiting some of them.

I did watch part of the Formula E from Monte Carlo today. That brought back memories of our Viking Cruise last year when we had a port call there and spent a day touring the area and the track. This was during the week before the F1 race and they had a different race the weekend before, so the track was all set up yet,and we rode a tour bus on the track. But, the darn bus would not go over about 5 MPH, no matter how much everyone told him to roll the tires. We did get to see many of the F1 cars in the garages getting ready.
There are lots of sites to see and tour there also, even though not all are car or cycle related, including Princess Grace's Palace.

Mid-Ohio is a great place. When I first got the riding bug attending WSB at Laguna with my brothers one of them mentioned Mid-Ohio and its "probably not that far". Later that year I was there for the SCCA runoffs and attended many events there over the years, had season pass a few years and would be there for SCCA regional rounds when the infield isn't even open.

The Vintage bike event is great, so is the Vintage Sports Car event, usually held in June which often conflicted with STAR.

And yes, the vintage bike event at Barber is great. Hoping to attend that this year.

I raced vintage motocross a few times at Mid Ohio on my Bultaco Pursang and rode vintage trials on my Bultaco Sherpa T and I also took one of Reg Pridmore's CLASS road course schools on my 99 Honda Super Hawk. Neat place, but I agree with Carl that Road America has the best food, as several local organizations had their own setups, serving their specialties.

Regarding food, I generally pack my own stuff in, even during the years I rode to races. I get to eat what I like, don't need to wait in long lines, and save some money. More gas for riding :)  So I don't know what much they sell at most tracks I've visited. I do remember Laguna Seca having quite a lot of options, with the tri-tip sandwich being most excellent.
