Yamaha's New FJ-09

Kinda looks like a GSed FZ-1.  I think one of the biggest benefits of the Yamaha product line is the valve check/adjustment interval.  Nearly double what everybody else is.

Impressive looking  .  .  .  .  and it's a Yamaha.  My local dealer got one in last week and has had lots of "lookers".

They are certainly making great progress with that triple.  I'm in the market for a new sport tourer and the Ninja 1000 and the FJ-09 are at the top of the list.

IMO, a lot more like a Triumph Tiger 1050 with a bit of FZ1 flash.

Oh my... I had the extreme pleasure of Demo riding my friend, Phil's brand new FJR-09 today! Damn that is a nice bike! Quick and nimble! Light and flickable! I didn't ride it far but really like it a lot! I don't suppose I could trade even for my 1999 Suzuki SV650?!?!
Also at our ride today Virginia showed up on her brand new Polaris Slingshot! Ohhhh...Ahhhh! Super cool. No I didn't get to "drive" it but I did get to sit in it!
We did have a great ride today... 321 miles or so.

Picked up my FJ-09 last week. Got about 350 miles on it, more of it on the slab than I would like. Picked
it up in Byron Georgia about 185 miles South. Really like the very light feel and quick response. Very comfortable.

I also bought an FJ-09, two months ago. It's light and fast, you can get to 100 mph before you know it. Handles well and is comfortable for some distance. So far the longest ride I have taken it on is about 300 miles. I could have gone twice that far with ease. I have just over 1,600 miles on it so far and have planed several rallies for this summer. I also have a 93 FJ1200. This bike has been with me since it was new, other bikes have come and gone but this one stayed. I don't ever plan on parting with it.


To be honest there are a few things you need to know before buying a FJ-09.
 #1 The top speed is limited to about 115 mph. This it done by the ECU limiting the RPM in the top three gears. You can have the ECU reprogrammed to remove this, cost of this service less than $100.00.
 #2 The oil drain sticks down below everything else. There is a simple fix by changing the drain plug. Then grinding down ramp protecting the drain plug. This will keep you from damaging the oil pan. The new oil drain plug is about $8.00, it is a Mazda part and sits almost flush.

Yamaha is aware of these, but no fix from them yet.
 
#3 The insurance for this bike is very reasonable, I pay about $300.00 per year.

What is the seat height?  This may be my replacement for the Tiger when the time comes.

Seat height is just about 32", I believe.  But it is quite narrow also.  Haven't ridden one, but did sit on one a few times and it was very comfortable.  My FZ6 is set up similar to the FZ-09, otherwise I would have considered getting one.  I'm sure the 09, since it has about 300 more cc and is a triple, has a much different feel from the engine than the 4cyl 600cc engine in my 6.  I'd probably like that, but my 6 really has all the engine I need.

I've ridden two different FJ09's and really enjoyed the bike. So much so that on my trip in July I'm renting one. The call it the MT09 Tracer.
