Another new GPS: Satellite Imagery
« on: January 06, 2015, 11:09:02 am »
I got a Garmin Etrex 20 ($150) for Christmas and a one year Birdseye Satellite Imagery subscription ($30). The Etrex comes without detailed road maps but I was able to load City Nav 2014 and the detailed roads, routes, tracks and waypoints display over the imagery. This is probably old news to you DS guys but I am excited about it. I bought the Etrex for use with my KLX and Pelican (kayak) but plan to try to mount it on my Concours along with the Nuvi 550. I will also use it for route planning to determine whether roads are pave or not. Due to the lousy speed of my Hughesnet connection I cannot effectively view google maps or google earth online.

The Birdseye Imagery works with Basecamp. You select the customizeable area you want to download and choose one of three resolutions (depending on what you need and available space on your device). The Etrex has a tiny screen, I don't think it will be that useful for on the fly navigating on the KLX but should be fine in the kayak.
