Michelin PR3 vs PR4
« on: July 31, 2014, 04:44:08 PM »
O)K, so I am getting ready to order tires for my '01 VFR. Last set was PR3, and I got around 6,000 miles on them. Very pleased with their grip and overall performance, especially after riding back to MI from OH in the rain most of the way. In looking at pricing, one vendor had the PR4 price (for the set front and rear) at about $20 less than PR3 ($282 versus $302). I'm looking for feedback from people who have run the new PR4 versus the PR3. Did you like them - better or worse.

I figure the PR4's can't be any worse than the PR3 - but I've been wrong before.

I ran the PR3's on my ST1300 and really liked them.
They made a PR3 Trail which I used on my Explorer and I also liked that tire.
Since then I used the PR4 Trail on my last trip, which I liked even better....good in rain and decent mileage.
The tread pattern on the Trail model is the same as the street model so you may have the same results.
Hope this helps. -JEP-

Thanks for the feedback Jim. I'm thinking the PR4 is the way to go. I'll see if anyone else chimes in.  ;D

I went from the 2 to the 4 on my 06 VFR.  Very noticable difference.  Kind of buzzy and stiff but stick well and predictable turn in.  However the turn in is heavier and slower than the 2.  Hope that helps.   Unfortunately not my favorite version love the 2s

The August issue of Motorcycle Consumer News has a letter from Ken Bowen with a not so flattering review of Pilot Road 4 GT's. MCN also had issues with it on the new RT (July?).   Aaron

I went a different direction with my 02 VFR to Pirelli Angel GTs.  I just took them on a trip to SE Missouri.  (Yes, lot's of twisties!) The feel was much better than the PR2s I had been running.  I don't have any experience with PR3s or PR4s.  YMMV

Thanks to all for the feedback. I was very happy with my PR3s, and have never gotten more than 3000 on a set of previous tires. Keep in mind, the vast majority of my riding experience was on the considerably more twisty roads of Southern California (compared to Michigan's flat curveless expanses) so I was impressed to get over 6000 on the PR3's. I just ordered the PR4's from jakewilson.com for $282 delivered to my door next week Tuesday. Since I'll be slabbing from MI to OH for the trip to MPFB, and again later in Sept. up to northern Michigan for the TOTM ride, I think these will do just fine. If I get another 6000 on the PR4's I'll be very pleased.

Ride safe and thanks again.

Hi Rich,

For three years now I've ridden mostly on PR3s, first on my Kaw C-14 and now on my Triumph Trophy, and have been quite happy with them, generally getting around 7K on the rear and 10K on the front (on the Trophy, less on the C-14). On this year's tour, I mounted a set of PR4GTs on my Trophy before starting out. I too had hoped to get significantly better longevity especially on the rear tire, but got only 8,100 on the one rear tire and 8,400 & 9,600 on the two front tires that I had mounted. Since PR4GTs were quite scarce for a while, I had to revert to PR3s on the rear. Although some riders claim to get over 10K front and rear, they are likely to be much lighter than I (@260#) and not carrying much touring luggage, or have a much gentler riding style.

As for handling, I like both PR3 and PR4GT tires, but seem to actually prefer the bike's handling on PR3s. When I have to rely on dealers to supply and mount replacement tires while on tour, the PR3s are also less expensive.

The factory-mounted Pirelli Angel STs on my Trophy also gave me around 7K/10K, but I went to PR3s as soon as possible. I didn't appreciate how the rear tire would look to have sufficient tread depth, but only 200-300 miles later would suddenly show cord along the centerline of the tire, despite still having at least 3/32 of tread depth remaining. I have not tried any Angel GTs.

I had the PR3's and they are superb in the wet though not impressed with their longevity.

I love the PR3's and get half the mileage that Donmoe does. I wear them out in 3-4,000 miles in the twisties. it is my first choice on all my bikes. I have PR4's on only one bike and it will be another year or two before I can compare them to the PR3.

Thanks again to all for the input. I'm gonna close this down, as I got the PR4's and they did just fine, except in the gravel 4 weekends back. But that's a different story.  >:(
