Title: Well I went and did it... Had a heart attack
Post by: Brick on August 05, 2016, 09:24:45 PM
I'm in Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. I'm awaiting a triple bypass. Probably on Monday or Tuesday.
This happened on Wednesday AM while working out at a facility associated with the smaller hospital in Morganton. Thursday they did a heart cath and found much more than they had anticipated. Three major blockages on the left side of my heart. Since I lost a lot of weight and am in good condition they think I'm a good candidate for a less invasive surgery. I wish to go that way.
I want/need to get the hell out of here!

Holy-Moly Brick!
The good news if we can call it that, is that it occurred while you were at a medical facility. Please keep us posted on your progress. Any prognosis of when you'll be back on two-wheels?
Hang tough, buddy!

Thank God you've found the problem before any permanent damage was done! The workouts have obviously helped you, and hopefully you'll be as good as new in short order. Count your blessings buddy, the cemeteries are full of good guys who didn't have the benefit of a warning. Our prayers will be with you, and we are sincerely willing to do anything we can to help, short of footing a big medical bill that is :). Syd

Hang in there, Brick.  It's a big deal, but it is also quite common.

I read the following:
"The surgery can take 3 to 6 hours. You will stay in the hospital at least 3 to 8 days after the surgery. It can take 4 to 6 weeks to recover at home. Most people are able to return to work within 1 to 2 months after surgery.

Oh no!  They'll put you back to work.  ;-)

Is there a joke in there somewhere? Like the old question about a guy asking if he'd be able to play the piano after surgery, being told yes, and then him saying how great that would be since he couldn't play before.
Brick: Will I go back to work after the surgery?
Doctor: Certainly.
Brick: Darn...I quit working years ago, and now I have to start again?

We are all pulling for you and hoping for a quick and full recovery.  Goes without saying that we all want to see you back on the road and posting up pictures of your wintertime riding again this year.  We all look forward to seeing just how nice it is down there, while we are shoveling snow up here..... :) .   LOL

Unfortunately, as the the average age of the club continues to creep up, we are all becoming candidates for more and more medical problems.  I know that you have been working very heard over the last months to improve your physical condition, and that will help you to recover more fully and more quickly.  But this should serve as a wake up for all of us slackers that we all need to start doing more.

GET WELL SOON!!!

Thank you all for the encouraging words... except the work part. No I don't want to do that.
As is everything in this world, it's all about timing. Teresa, our daughter, is flying in to spend a week with us on Sunday. Now she gets to visit the old man in the hospital. Also I was signed up  to ride this years http://sc-ma.com/rides/three-flags-classic-tour. I'm bummed I won't be going! The route this year is from Tombstone, AZ to Kimberely BC. It's 4 days three nights with 3 or 4 check points. I've ridden it twice before. I would have been leaving here probably on the 26th to have an enjoyable ride out to Tombstone.
My ticket is now for sale if any of you want to ride the Three Flags. Let me know asap as I'm going to contact the sc-ma.com soon.

Regarding when I can ride again... well obviously it depends on how the surgery goes. There are two types of this surgery that they are considering. The normal crack you sternum and go in which the recovery time is much longer. The other way is through the ribs and it is only possible for me for a couple of reasons. 1) my current physical condition is very favorable and 2) because my three blockages are on the left side of my heart. The recovery time from it is much less. I sure am pulling for the second method!

Oh YES! As I was typing this the surgeon came in and told me he will be doing the less invasive surgery on Tuesday morning!

Brick,

Considering all the remote places you could have been when this happened, you are VERY fortunate. Also, you're getting the less invasive surgery. It will take time for sure, but it sounds to me like a full recovery is in the offing. I'm very happy for you.

The heart attack I had in 2009 was traumatic, but after my recovery, my health was much better than before the heart attack. This is a real possibility for you too.

Remember it's always darkest just before dawn. Don't be discouraged or intimidated. Best wishes for a quick recovery!

I echo all the posted sentiments. I have some stents and know what it means. You honestly have to count your blessings. This could of happened where you couldn't get immediate medical care. Thank the man above as I'm sure he'll be with you. Pray for quick recovery and looking forward to you  soon to be riding again. Larry

OMG!!! And here I thought you were invincible. ;)   Listen Buddy, no joking here, the Lord above was watching out for you 'cause we still need you HERE. Pay attention to the Dr.s and have a speedy recovery. You have to give up the globe trotting for a little bit but you may bounce back better than before. Or you could just hang out at the home for wayward bikers!
Good thoughts and prayers coming your way.  TM

Hey Brick.  We will be praying for your speedy recovery.  I've known several people who have had bypass surgery and the operation itself has always gone well.  The mental and emotional aftermath was a different story for my mother.  For some reason she suffered anxiety episodes after the surgery and remained hooked on tranquilizers and anti-depressants for the rest of her life.  So if you feel a bit off kilter mentally after the procedure don't sweat it, since that is more or less normal for a while.  You also have a wonderful therapy tool in your garage.  I recommend extensive 2 wheel therapy as soon as the docs allow it.  If your mental health is at stake you may need to buy another motorcycle or two.  Perhaps three in the event that you feel really stressed.

Brick, take the drugs if you need them. It hurts to breath deeply, which is what you need to do the keep the pnumonia far away!
Did they harvest any veins from your legs, or did they use either of the 2 IMA's? (The arteries behind your sternum)
Keep positive thoughts, regardless how you feel! Concentrate on how great it will feel to walk around your own 'hood!
Be mindful of any therapy, they are there to help you....and, it works!

They should incorporate taking pictures like these as part of the recovery process. It incorporates bending at the waist, lifting a leg, holding a camera (mostly) still, etc.

Anything is possible... I definitely have the need... but must play it by someone else's rules right now. I'm trying to understand what the hell in feeling right now. They didn't crack my sternum but they did spread my ribs and I've found where those ribs are attached around back. And to touch the area that they opened is... Freeky! Does not feel like me on either end. Getting of the damn Oxy so I can have a bowel movement is double edged... More weird pains but wonderful relief!!! You guys crack me up. Brick, when Steve and my dad had his neck injury and then spent too long in the hospital on pain meds, they told him he couldn't go home until he had a BM, and they'd been giving him all kinds of laxatives. He told them "Bring me a gallon of prune juice." They did it, then he did it, and then he got to go home.  8) ;D

I had to go before I could leave the hospital. They had been giving me all kinds of stuff including a suppository. Didn't work so she said she would have to bring in "The Bomb" if I didn't go. I said bring it and a glass of warm prune juice. I went!

In six months or so the bruises will be gone, the scars will be pink, and you'll have the blood flow of a 17 year old male.
You remember what you thought about a lot when you were 17, right? (not motorcycles, the other thing)
Yep the Mrs' will need to start eating her Wheaties and doing those Kegal exercises to be able to keep up with you.  :-*

 ;D

Brick, I'm very glad it all went well for you, and I wish you a quick return to the saddle...er I mean the one on the motorcycle....I'm just digging a bigger hole for myself here aren't I..... :-X

Ok you asked for it so here is an updated photo of operation site. No it's not a breast enhancement surgery.

I'm a little better rack and every day! During my almost a month of inactivity really took away muscle and stamina. That seems to come back so slowly. Obviously it couldn't have anything to do with the fact that I am also now 70 years old. DAMN!!! 70!!! That really is old!

I'm also down sitting on both bikes making vroom vroom noises for sure. I'm also feeling how heavy that Super Tenere is! I went and sat on this yesterday. (https://ridemsta.com/mstaforums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160910%2F1c1f0637963c9c79be779c4d328f5d09.jpg&hash=5e800fc0b8481bffd9bc9a9dcc17e08e2f137745)
I really like that. Could be in my future.

Brick,

Doesn't your SV650 do what that little Yami does, more or less?  Yes the Super-Tenere is heavy, but its a big touring bike and kind of needs to be. You're not crossing the plains or doing a 4-6 week cross country treck on a light naked bike.

Keep healing, see you on the road someday.

Actually, you could ride across the county on a naked bike. I rode my BMW F650GS (small windshield) to Alaska in 2014 covering nearly 18,000 miles in 8 weeks. It's under 400# dry weight and less than 50hp. On that trip I never felt like a needed more.

I could ride cross country on a 100+ year old bike that could break down any minute, but I wouldn't do that either ;)  I've know people to tour on a DR650 or a Ninja500, but I think most would agree those are not ideal (or even good choice) touring bikes.

I was simply pointing out that Yami Brick is talking about isn't that differerent from his SV650.

Oh but Steve the XSR900 is very different from a 28 year old V-twin! Very different!

28 years? Must have meant 18, I see yours is a 99.

If the XSR floats your boat have at it. You don't have to answer to me :)

I know you're just itching to ride big time, an hour on a Gromm would be a blast.

I did actually get out and ride the SV yesterday for 27 miles! Damn it felt great to get out! But at the same time it did show me a few more muscles that I hadn't used for a while!!

On the road again...

Well not "that" kind of road but I've started cardiac rehab! [THUMBS UP SIGN][THUMBS UP SIGN][THUMBS UP SIGN] Yea!!! It's about damn time! So the road to recovery!
After the interview today I know it will still be a while before I ride again. I don't know exactly how long a while is but perhaps I'll find out tomorrow. I do know they told me not to plan on riding to Orlando for AIMExpo the middle of next month. Well I can't improve without putting in the work. And at least now the work has stared!

Good news! Follow instructions so we can all see you again, next season if not sooner.

Great to hear you've finally started the rehab. Guess your season is pretty much done, but seeing as where you live maybe not. Work hard, and look forward to seeing you at a future event.

That's too bad Brick
However next year it will be closer to your former home.

The American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) has revealed its plan to move North America’s premier powersports trade show to a new host city in 2017, with Columbus, Ohio, set to welcome the industry next fall.
The Greater Columbus Convention Center (GCCC) will open its doors to hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of dealer and consumer attendees next September 21-24, 2017 for  the landmark fifth year of the event.

Shouldn't conflict with Barber Vintage Days that's usually held early in October

Heck, Columbus is right at 1/2 the distance it is to Orlando. I've ridden farther for less.

I liked it better when AIM was a couple hours away like this year. However it is so good we might go to Columbus next year!

Hey Brick--  in July 2012, i collapsed in the back yard pushing a mower, all classic symptoms of blockages per the doctor, installed 2 stints, and 6 weeks later rode the MAT with Galen, Jim and others. i would expect nothing less from you.--- and if you note the date of this reply, yes--- I just found out about your event. Best wishes!
