ok, I'll admit it, this may be a long shot and most of you probably don't who this is, or what this has to do with STAR. Most of you probably think this is a pretty weird question, and I'm pretty weird for asking it...but I don't care! ;D
Robert A Heinlein is considered by many as the greatest Sci-fi author of the 20th century (Stranger in a Strange Land, ring a bell?), and just happens to be my favorite author of this type of book/writing. And....he was born in Butler, Mo. about 150 miles straight north of Springdale. Before he died a few years ago, he and his wife helped the Butler public library to expand, and they have set up a museum honoring him in the new wing his gift helped build.
So I'm thinking that since I am going to be so (relatively) close to Butler, I'd really like to take a morning and run up to the museum and pay homage to a man whose writings have given me so many hours/days of enjoyment and pleasure.
Anyone want to join me? ::)

TANSTAAFL......Moon is my favorite novel as well. I've heard rumors it's being made into a movie.

I read "Puppet Master" when I was 13 years old from the back seat of a Corvair traveling with my family through the western part of the country.

One suggestion for your trip to another galaxy - get to Butler early and eat breakfast at the Koehn Bakery, 101 South Orange street, Butler, MO. It is a Mennonite bakery specializing in sausage rolls and sour cream cookies. Leave room for a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie.

It sounds like there is some interest in this and there could be more than what we're seeing here. You of you guys needs to pick a day (or days) and volunteer to do this ride. There will be sheets somewhere in the lobby area where you can describe your ride, specify the start time, where to meet, etc. Interested parties can sign up to express their desire to go along.

Sounds good to me, and not just the eating part. I have enjoyed everything RAH wrote in the genre. For the uninitiated, the movie Starship Troopers ( As well as numerous Rock and roll songs) have been based on his writings, and if you look at my tag line under my name here, you will see a quote from Lazarus Long in one of the future histories...
I would love to get into this ride as well...

Interesting, what is the length of the ride?
Will some want to do a different pace if the roads are good?

I was quite honestly just figuring on going myself and am very surprised by the response I've received. My thought was I would just jump on a the highway to get up there, and then figure out a return route based on time and weather. Doesn't look to be any interesting roads anywhere north of Joplin, so I was thinking this would be more of a destination ride, rather than any ride in search of good roads. Possibly just use the highway to get there, and back as far as Joplin, then loop around either west or east to get some good roads in on the way back to Springdale.

I have some good roads in far southern Missouri but haven't got any suggestions for this far up. I see that Highway 71 is now Interstate 49 which just happens to be the interstate that runs right past the host hotel.
I'm sure I can introduce you to a few Missouri members that could give you some roads to explore. Jim Williams from KC area and Gary Hodges from just southeast of Springfield are 2 members that I know are coming to the rally.
Possibly even Gayla may pipe back in with a few suggestions.
