Title: GPS Routes for Rides at Star 2015
Post by: dpippin on May 13, 2015, 06:55:43 AM
Are there or will there be any GPS routes available for members attending Star 2015?

Hey Doug,
I'm trying to work on them in between cataract surgeries however I'm not getting the actual tracks from Bill and having to convert them from hand written notes from phone conversations.  It's driving me a bit crazy right now as I can't keep them from rerouting when I recalculate them.

So far I have 3 routes from him and I think he has another 3 routes or so for the road.

Gayla has also gotten some dirt tracks from a couple of others and those have been passed to Norm.

I'm heading for T-27 this weekend and will try to get a better understanding from Bill and see if I can offload from his GPs what he's been riding these last few weeks.

Denise.....don't give up!

Dennis, Jim, and I all went through the same thing when we were setting up routes for STAR in Lexington.  Frustrating!  But worth the time and effort.  It wasn't until we all got together at TriStar that we could really get them worked out and set.  The more I look at Ark. maps, it seems that just about ANY road is going to be a good one, so looks like there is a lot to choose from.  Can't wait!

Denise,

Bill called me Sunday and provided information for 2 Adventure/Dual Sport routes.  I completed them in route and track format and forwarded to Gayla Monday.  They are ready for distribution.  One less chore for you to do.  I will send them to you also, but I need your current email address.

Something to consider- if the routes will not navigate in a GPS, then drop the routes and use the tracks only.  With dual sport riding, I always use tracks and almost never use routes.  And tracks are consistent from one GPS to another, but routes are not.  So for STAR 2015, the ADV routes may need to be tracks only.

Still looking!!

It's nice to be able to see routes prior to an event and be able to modify them to suit your own riding preferences.

Maybe I'll have to make my own routes, however it would help to have some local knowledge

I can post what I have but they are not complete and a couple when I recalculated changed so they won't work with different versions.
Also since we started on them 23 has been completely closed and will not be open in the foreseeable future which has changed some of the proposed routes.
Bill is unable to give me tracks so I'm having to put waypoints in at most intersections and hope I get them on the right side of the road.

I have plenty on my plate right now and will try to work on them this weekend but I am making no promises.

Not trying to be pushy and appreciate your efforts.
Sounds like you could use some help.

I'll just work on some routes for myself and hope that the roads I'm using are good ones.

Doug:

This is Bill O'Brien, I live in Springdale.
If you want to give me a call, I'd be glad to give you some advice on route selection.

Here is a link to a site with lots of rides mapped out - with descriptions and downloadable gpx files.

The 2015 STAR routes are loaded in the Donwloads - Members Only GPX area.
If you have seen them already double check as I have since loaded a Revised version of them.
Found that 2 of them had routed a shorter dirt road into them so have corrected them.

Also you will find a set of KLM files for those that want to look at them via Google Earth.

Bill and Matt are creating some poster boards and also some printed sheets that will be available at STAR.

There are actually a few new roads that Bill found going thru the Indian Reservation in Northeast Oklahoma that I haven't been on.
Each year they seem to pave another dirt road in that place and the ones I have ridden are nice new pavement with little to no traffic.

See everyone at STAR in just 2 weeks - looking forward to it
