Title: Honda CB500X
Post by: rideandfly on December 05, 2015, 08:05:42 AM
My intention for the 2015 Honda CB500X is for solo mountain pavement day rides mixing in fire road riding, too. This bike works fine on twisties. The biggest surprise with this bike is the 70MPG fuel economy. Have not had the Honda CB500X long, but already adding bolt on modifications. Trying to minimize weight gain with bolt on mods, too.

Before mods:

Will not be installing center stand, use paddock stands for maintenance/cleaning:

Replaced original passenger hand holds with Givi trunk mount and bolted a Pelican 1400 case directly to the mount:

So you are going to take this off road? What tires do you think you might run?

Yesterday I rode with some of the Carolina Old Farts. Steve was along on his CB500X. His is set up for road only and he has a trunk too.

Next mods bash-plate/crash bars & pegs. Might powder coat the bash-plate/crash bars, will see.

Here's a shot from today showing mods so far:

Rally Raid Bash Plate, shields and foot pegs arrived. Took the bash plate & shields to the powder coat shop yesterday to change colors. They packed too many stainless shields, but Rally Raid told me I now have spares.

I'm not trying to steal your CB thread, as I was sitting on one at the local dealer this morning. I am wondering if anyone has taken a test ride on a Honda CTX 700DCT? I know I'm exposing my manhood to extreme ridicule and scorn, but the darn thing is so comfortable. Local dealers just say no to test rides, and I don't know anyone that owns one. I've seen a lot of YouTube videos, but no one answers the question of how easy it is to drag hard parts. If you are embarrassed to answer me publicly, please send me a pm.

Syd, Have not ridden a CTX, don't have much info on that bike, sorry about that.

Geoffrey, The CB has a large international following and many bolt on parts available. Really surprised me seeing the Rally Raid video after I purchased the bike.

Here's Rally Raid foot pegs:

Syd,
I have not ridden the CTX 700 but I do remember sitting on it and thinking that it has cruizer foot peg locations. I also wonder about ground clearance when taking the corners?? Other than that I think it looks good and has ABS and nice bags. Hmm... could be a great bike. ???

I think my next bike will be a used CB500X and a full rally raid kit.  The Strom is almost 12 years old.  Paid off.  I did the math and even if I bought a brand new CB500X and the full on Rally Raid kit I'd be in it for a bit under 10 grand before my time to install all the mods.

The CB is working out nicely. Rode 225 miles round trip yesterday and got 68MPG, it has a 4.5 gallon tank! Have a DL650 too, it has more power than the CB, but the CB has all the power I need.

Have the Rally Raid bash plate/crash bar combo and shields out for powder coating. Hope to pick them up next week, will post installation photos.

Rideandfly I bought my CB500X last spring put about 4500 miles on her . Fuel mileage is outstanding! I like liter bikes but for me a lighter twin platform that can get me around the block or coast to coast and around 6K well it's a great bike. With this price point you suffer a little on the front end suspension. I've found pushing her hard through the corners at speed and having uneven pavement causes front end chatter. Really ups your concentration and pucker factor as the speed and lean angle increases. I'm going to install new springs, fork emulators and adjustable pre load caps which will help. I'm going to shoe on those new Bridgestones which should be an improvement over the Pirelli Scorpions.  I'll be riding my CB 500X to the Vermont Star get togethers maybe I'll catch you there and we can compare notes. Understand!!!!  Every time I ride it Happy I bought it, too!!!!!

Received a set of Hagon Fork progressive springs and 7.5W fork oil.  The OEM springs are a little firm for me, and understand these springs work better from riders in the UK. Will install soon!

I purchased a 2016 Honda CB 500 X OEM factory windshield for my 2014 CB 500 X. Installed in highest position and found that the wind hitting my helmet face shield isn't what I wanted. I went to hardware store and picked up four plastic spacers two long and two short. I will install with longer stainless button head screws tilting the top of the shield away or forward seeing if I can move the air up to the top of my helmet. Will report findings and pics later.

I did not like the 2016 screen and sold it. I purchased a Bruundt CNC bracket that allows me to move my stock screen up and down. Over the course of riding in a week I adjusted it several times and found the sweet spot. Stock screen looks good not big and adds imo to the overall looks of the bike.

Wardie,

Had to put my stock screen in the lowest position to clear the Barkbusters.  Have you checked the fuel economy? I've been getting 65 to 70MPG mostly on twistys and fire roads.

The CB is a sweet bike.

Took this shot on our last twisty/fire road ride::

I don't have a CB500X, but I do have another bike that gets what I consider to be excellent fuel economy. I'm glad to see others considering fuel economy as one of their "performance" points in determining a bike purchase. For a long time, I've been thinking I was almost alone in that respect.

The CB runs great on 87RON gas. With a 4.5 gallon tank at 70MPG, it has great range, too. Replaced the CB fork springs and having a fine time with this bike.

Had bikes up to 1800CC, but enjoy riding bikes 250 to 650CC lately. Have a slow build Ninja 250 that should come in well under 300 pounds wet, currently working on losing weight myself.  :)

rideandfly, I have a stock screen but use the Bruudt windshield adjuster. Hardly visible but allows me to move windshield up and down to suit airflow coming onto me.  I too average anywhere between 60 and 69 mpg as long as I'm not consistently ridding in the high 70's or mid 80's :)
For the Fly By I just took my top case and had a change of clothes in it. For the BMW Fingerlakes Rally it'll be four days I'll put my Blaze Saddlebags on. Mileage with drop a little when those are added. I just put a Corbin on and I love it. I'm a fan of hard wide seats. Works good for me.
My screen doesn't interfere with my Storm handguards at all no matter what position the shield is in. Maybe because of the Bruudt?
Nate (riding buddy who has 2013 CB 500 X) really rode the wheels off at MPFB. Hot as all get out maybe I lost a few pounds I dunno but it was hot and humid bike performed well in all conditions.

"The CB runs great on 87RON gas. With a 4.5 gallon tank at 70MPG, it has great range, too. Replaced the CB fork springs and having a fine time with this bike."

Rideandfly what's you weight (if u don't mind me asking)? I'm very much interested in changing the rebound characteristics on my bike and thinking about Rally Raid Stage 1.

Just got home from a camping trip!

Nice looking CB!!!!!

Installed Rally Raid foot pegs and bash plate on my CB.

Installed Hagon progressive fork springs with original Honda preload spacers and 7.5W PJ1 fork oil. This got rid of most of the fork harshness with my weight of 215 pounds, working on getting down to 190 pounds.  At the time these springs were available in the UK, so had a US Hagon distributor to add my springs with one of their regular shipments from the UK.

Next set of tires to be installed on the CB will be Avon TrailRiders. Have been experimenting with lower tire pressures compared to my normal street pressures while riding fire roads to reduce large gravel harshness with tubeless 120/70/17 and 160/60/17 Pirelli Scorpions.

I think I am going to order the rally Raid Level 1 kit. I have fork gaiters(boots) that I'm going to install to keep the tubes and seals clean so I'll do everything at one time. Thanks for the report RideandFly.

Are U coming to the Fall Colors ride?

Rally Raid folks are serious about supplying everything needed to have fun with the CB off road.

We will not make Fall Colors this year. We camp all over the nation and finally have a rig we can camp with and take a motorcycle, too. Hopefully will be able to camp and attend some MSTA events next year. We are going to the Tellico Plains TN JFF gathering next month!
