I've been guilty of taking whatever I'm riding down pretty much whatever road I see that looks interesting. I've been lucky, and I know it, in that I've not dropped one of my street bikes in slick conditions.

Wow! What a great trip, except for the slippy mud part. Sorry to hear about the bike and especially your ankle, but glad you're on the mend!
