Post by: STLTHMSTA on April 01, 2019, 09:25:18 AM
Hey!! Where is everybody? Are we busy getting ready for riding season? I haven't seen a new post in days, am I in the Twilight Zone? Maybe everyone is mad because I'm gonna win the raffle bike. Hmmmmm.

I'm coming off the tail end of working almost every day for 6 weeks sometimes for as much as 18 hours a day. I haven't had time to do a lot of fun reading or writing, and my riding, such as it is, has been primarily relegated to commuting. As an "up" note, I've lost 10+ pounds because I've not had time to sit around the house and do my usual snacking. I'm not thin, but I'm holding steady at a weight I haven't maintained since nearly 20 years ago.

I fear the preponderance of postings and posters on FB have killed this forum.

There are plenty of people who do not participate on Facebook

I'm with you Doug.  I hate it that their traffic doesn't flow here.

Yep and Richard knows that, since several of his siblings are not on FB either, including me.

But with many more people posting on FB and much more activity there, it means fewer and fewer people posting here which results in less people bothering to even check for activity here. I used to look every day or two, now its probably weekly. It is slowing dying off, and that is not likely to change. Never were a lot of people posting here, far less now after the years and iterations of the forum.

The issue I've seen is that once people start using FB to correspond with a lot of their "friends" the less inclined they are to use other forms of communication. Not just this forum, but email and phone calls too.

Semi-retired...yes. But the entertainment world is most active during the winter and early spring months. I've been super busy the last few weeks in anticipation of having nothing to do during the warmer months except to ride...aw, gee.

Hmmm... your right... no posts here. Actually I have been out riding some. We’ve had a run of nice weather. I could have posted that but y’all would have thought I was just rubbing it in. So I didn’t.

Here is something to look forward to....The weather is getting warmer in Minnesota.  The Mississippi River is open at La Crosse.  Right here in Southern MN we will be in the 60's in the next few days.  No snow for several weeks and just some light sprinkles recently.  It is about time to change so we can do some riding.  But, before I ride, I wait for a hard rain, to clean the streets of road salt and sand.

Denise and I were in Puerto Rico Mar. 23-30 for a Methodist Church Mission trip helping to rebuild houses from Hurricane Maria.  It was 86-89F each day, and down to 79F at night with high humidity.  We had electricity where we stayed, so we had fans but no AC.  It was hard to get accustomed to that weather after leaving below zero Minnesota.

Most of the bikes that we saw, were Polica and they had a high bubble light on the back, hard to balance.  They all wore a face mask, with goggles and helmet.  Could not see their face at all.  Must have been hot as they were lane splitting and weaving around cars.

Carl we had a few inches of snow here last weekend in NE Ohio, that meant more salt on the roads. Since many of the good roads close to home are in a park in a valley, the riding there is dicey as every hill has a good chance of salt, right at the bottom where you need to stop. And the low water table of this river valley creates some of the worst roads around.

I plan to get out for a bit this weekend, it rained some yesterday and again today, hopefully that washed the junk away. I still need to have my radar working, to avoid the many large potholes.

Not sure that I'll be posting more when I'm riding, maybe in the lead up to STAR.

Last year when I was checking some roads near La Crosse for STAR, about this time of year, a few in the hills looked like they were not hard surface, just sand.  Could not see the white line in some places.  It had a light snow a week earlier and they poured on the sand.  Even the truck was locked into 4x4 to play it safe.

The biggest concern around here right now is not snow, or sand, or even much gravel.  It’s the condition of the roads in regard to a) how much they deteriorated over the winter, and b) how much mud the farmer’s tractors have drug onto the roads after plowing a field.

April is always a dicey month in the mid-east/south where it will be sunny and 75 one day, and the next it might be 55, overcast, raining, and 40 mph winds.  Followed up with another warm front from the south bringing up tornados. Not unusual to see some early spring snows either.

Going to be cloudy and 70 today though...Go Ride!

I rode a bit Saturday, local park roads that were a good slalom test at times. Luckily I avoided all the major holes, much easier than in the car. But I did skip one of the worst roads from my commute.

It sure did feel good to be back on the bike, even for a short local ride.

I'm members in both places, but I prefer fora to Facebook. It's hard to find something that's more than a few days old on Facebook.

This is also private, whereas anything I post on the Facebook group is visible to ALL my facebook friends. (and most of them don't care about my motorcycle touring hobby)

One thing that I think could GREATLY boost traffic to this forum is having a mobile-friendly page.

Regarding your last point, I believe many people post with their phone using something called Tapatalk. It would even pop up at the top of the forum page if you were visiting with a mobile device (I always see it on my tablet).

Brick, richgrab are some I thought were doing it that way.

Doing anything else probably requires much more time by the web admin (volunteer) staff or even different forum software.
