General Discussion / Re: accessories

Late to the party but I'd also give a thumbs up for Givi. I inherited a case on a used bike I bought, and while it had some aging issues including a problem with the lock it held up for several years of regular use on multiple bikes. The first time my brother borrowed mine on a trip on his VFR he was hooked, and had one ordered quickly. I since bought a newer one that is lighter and a bit more compact, necessary to avoid overloading which caused a bracket to crack.

Regarding RKA, I too recall hearing that they may be going out of business or looking to sell. I have one tank bag from them that is pretty good, but I have to say it was not as good as an older model of the bag I had borrowed from a friend before buying this one. (Fewer features, rain cover was extra and not very waterproof.) That was a purchase maybe 10 years ago that I haven't used much since. But that is very common these days, "they just don't make them like they used to". I have also had pretty good luck with an Eclipse tank bag, as well as a Tourmaster magnetic tank bag that fits several of my bikes well.

Tusky-Musky Rally / Re: Road Routes
« Last post by stevegrab on May 17, 2024, 04:12:26 PM »
I was riding in Ohio once (route 93 just north of Sugar Creek) coming thru a corner and over a rise, there was a horse and buggy stopped and traffic at the cross street, and coming the other way. The horse raised those front legs pretty high and appeared to be doing a wheelie as I grabbed the binders to avoid getting caught up in the situation.

Also have to watch out for the road apples, or as Quint Marcaletti calls them "Amish exhaust".

Sorry I missed this event in my backyard, but look forward to seeing some of you at other events thru the year, including Tri-STAR next weekend.

General Discussion / Re: Helmet Styles and What is the Right Choice
« Last post by Ride4MS on April 30, 2024, 09:17:59 PM »
I read the article below today about helmets. Some of you may already subscribe to these articles from The Twisted Road Blog with Austin Rothbard. He has published a few articles that I wrote and sent to him in the past.

https://www.twistedroad.com/blog/posts/how-to-select-a-motorcycle-helmet?utm_source=365%20Engaged&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Lane%20Splitting%20%2801HWNB2ESA679PW5ZXQ70FH8Z8%29&_kx=v6g_ObwvHKpYzUZNrazIE3k_7ZZSN1xbPsfs9bA4ja0.VRRuwv

Austin talks about when choosing a motorcycle helmet, and there are several factors to consider, including safety ratings, fit, comfort, and style. Before you start shopping, you should determine what features are most important to you and what your budget is.
He also mentions the two main testing standards used in helmets. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Snell Memorial Foundation.

I mentioned in a previous posting that the Snell testing is the only testing that is done by an independent foundation, where as any helmet company can test and say that their helmet passes DOT standards and install a sticker. And, it may not meet the DOT standards.

If a company wants their helmet tested for Snell standards, they send a request to Snell Foundation, they in turn go purchase a few of that model helmet at random and test them so that there is no cheating.

Bottom line, the safest helmet is a helmet that is Snell Certified. But, after reading the article, are you purchasing a helmet to be as safe as possible, or comfort or style, or price.
That is a decision that only the person buying the helmet can decide.
