Post by: ff73148 on June 29, 2015, 09:41:20 PM
I hear that 2016 STAR is in VT. Can someone tell me the dates and where? Thanks.

June 19-22, 2016.

I passed through that area last month over the Memorial Day weekend. You could still see some snow in some small pockets up on the mountain. Here's hoping it will be cooler there next June than Arkansas was this year.

I'd guess 10-20 degrees cooler in VT than AR that time of year.  I might have to bring my "electrics." :-)

Next 10 days for Stratton Mt. show highs in the mid 70's-80, and lows in the 50-60 degree range.  Figure 5-10 degrees warmer down in the valley areas.  Sounds just about perfect to me.  :)

AccuWeather shows the historic averages for this time of year with lows around 57 and highs around 81 in Bondville (at the base of the mountain). Yeah, that sounds good to me and I'm looking forward to it.

I don't know if I'll have time to go to the Mount Washington Auto Road during STAR, but it's definitely on my list of things to include in a post STAR extension.

Mt Washington is worth the visit but keep in mind that it's 190 miles from our host hotel riding the direct route. That's going to be a BIG day at approximately 400 miles round trip through the mountains.
Also if weather conditions change (usually wind) the road to the top may suddenly close especially to motorcycles. The auto road is a privately owned business and motorcycles are charged $16/bike. -JEP-

When we rode to Nova Scotia a few years ago, we passed within easy range of Mt Washington coming/going but it was clouded over both times.  As you said, being able to take the road Mt Washington  is not a sure thing.

I would love to finally get to go up Mt Washington. I've tried on two separate trips but it's been closed both times. As others have said perhaps after STAR. But then I think I'm going to try to ride up to Nova Scotia after.
It's something to think about.

Went up in 2011 on the way back from Newfoundland. It was too windy on the trip up for motorcycles (even with a sidecar). Lucked out on the trip back. Great weather but a lot of clutch slipping following the sleds who were sightseeing on the way up instead of waiting for the downhill trip. I took the steam cog railway back in 1992, but its now propane I think (damn environmentalists).

I made it up Mt Washington on my first try.  It was one of those rare days where the weather was perfect. We could see everything as clear as a bell.  The buddy I was with was on his third attempt.  Its one of those must see places when you go to or from STAR.
