Title: STAR HISTORICAL DATA
Post by: NinjaBob on May 22, 2022, 01:10:08 PM
UPDATE: I have added links to STAR group photos. Click the year field to view. I am missing 84, 85 and 2010.  I believe 86 was the first year for group pictures but if you have these please email them! At the first Star in 1983 we did not take a group picture but the club conducted a Bike Judging contest, attendees would vote for the favorites in different categories. I took a picture of the lined up bikes and have used this in lieu of the group picture for 83.

This, a work in progress, is a display of the data I have compiled on HSTA/MSTA STARs. As you can see much data is missing. I am reaching out to past STAR attendees to provide missing data. If you have info to add reply to the STAR HISTORY MAP section in the mstaforums at ridemsta.com or send an email to Ninjabob [@ridemsta DOT COM] (The address is doctored to foil harvester bots). Once the data is complete I plan to link it it to the STAR map linked above. If you know someone who may have STAR info but is not on the forum  please send them the link.

Your help in this project will be greatly appreciated.

Don't know the hotels or the raffle bike, but here's the locations.

I am not finding a Crowne Plaza in Lexington and there a re a bunch of Holiday Inns. The hotel industry changes so much I may not be able to identify the exact venue locations on the map in some cases unless I can get the address.

UPDATE: I located my Garmin routes for STAR 2013 and my waypoint for the hotel is labeled Crowne Plaza-Campbell House and the address now comes up as the Campbell House 1375 S BROADWAY so 2013 is done.  However I doubt if I am going to find my routes for Star 2005!

Bob when you have trouble finding details post them to this or your other thread with the map and members will try to help. I can recall some details of things, even going back to my first STAR (State College PA in 2001) but when I looked at the hotels in town none were ringing a bell. I remember it being a place that had other hotels nearby, across the street even.

Hotels often change ownership after the IRS tax deduction for depreciation runs out. Another chain buys it and the 20 year depreciation deduction starts over.  If I remember correctly the Hotel in Hot Springs 2002 was the Majestic, which was OLD back then. I think it has since been torn down.

I think the solution is going to be old newsletters. I know a member that may have almost all of them. I am going to ask him a big favor.

Bob, I thought I sent a reply yesterday, but don't see it. Info that I recall is that in 1995 STAR in Avon, the raffle bike was a ST1100 and was won by Tom Trieschmann. The 2002 bike for the Hot Springs STAR was a FZ1. I don't recall who won it, but that inspired Denise Dickenson to buy one and last I heard, she had over 200,000 miles on it.

Fred, you did submit the info about Avon and Hot Springs in the thread that contains the MAP link. I probably should have kept it to a single thread. Anyway I got your info and have added it to the database and the map. Thanks!

I posted a few updates in the thread for the map. If you can move them to this thread that might be a more appropriate location.

STAR '93 was in Helen, GA. I think it was a Comfort Inn at the time, but it is now the Baymont by Wyndham, at 8220 S Main Street. The lunch ride that year went to TWO Resort in Suches, GA.
STAR '94 was at what is now The Seassons Lodge at 560 State Rd. 46.
STAR '96 was at the Canaan Valley Resort (same place as in 2021), though things have been changed a bit since we were there in 1996.
STAR '99 was at the Comfort Inn, which is now the Quality Inn Event and Conference Center at 700 Pike Street. The Holiday Inn across the road was the overflow hotel, which was the scene of many Mail Pouch Flybys until that place was too run down to continue.
STAR '01 was at what is now the Ramada by Wyndham at 1450 S Atherton St. I don't recall what the name of the hotel was in 2001. The lunch ride went to a Marina on Raystown Lake, but I don't recall exactly which one. It may have been the Lake Raystown Resort Marina, but perhaps someone else has more information on that.

Hi Bob.
Here are a couple more for you.
As you noted, STAR '02 was at the Majestic Hotel in Hot Springs, AR. The hotel was located at about 109 Park Avenue, on the west side of the street (Majestic Alley is still there, on the north side of where the hotel stood). It closed in 2006, burned in 2014, and was torn down in 2016.
STAR '07 in Asheville was at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Resort. It is located off of I-240 and US-74 Alt on Resort Drive. This is just a little bit west of the French Broad River, on the north side of the expressway.
STAR '16, at Stratton Mountain Resort was at the Black Bear Lodge on Middle Ridge Road.
I wasn't in the club at the time, but I believe that STAR '87 was at the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground which is just a little bit south of Cruso. I've been by it many times. The address is 59 Motorcycle Dr, Canton, NC. It shows up on Google Maps, so it appears that it is still in operation. There are a few pics, the address and a telephone number, but it doesn't show a website or any other information about it.
I think that about covers all that I can add.
Keith

And the winner of the Raffle bike for 2016 (BMW F800GT) was yours truly.

Congrats again Rich! If I can get enough raffle winner names I will add a column for that data. All you winners out there, chime in.

Peter Spock (I believe that's his name) won the bike from last year's raffle. I've chatted with him on FB a few times.

Checked out the db and it has the Tiger listed for 2011 that I won.  I also won a VFR800 at the 1999 Star in Marietta.  That spot is blank.
