It WAS fun, but nothing compared to these roads in CA.

Is that AZ89 between Wilhoit and Prescott? Just eyeballing a map, that looks to be the twistiest part of that road.

I’ve been on 89A (in a car :( unfortunately) and it is a darn nice road.  Great pavement, we’ll banked, and twisty. Goes through Prescott and Jerome.  Great views too.

Yes, we spent the night in Prescott.

in CA, Palomar Mt Rd, Kern River road great roads with spectacular twisties. And CA 190 through Seqouia NF unbeliveable twisties!

I agree, I think Californian's must take their roads and scenery for granted. I know Arkansas is loved by many motorcyclists but I often think because there is nothing to see
but walls of trees so they concentrate on the curvy road and their riding.....but in CA the same roads as Arkansas have jaw dropping scenery just around the next curve and it is enjoyably
distracting so much so that the riding skills do seem to suffer a bit.
Still I've always greatly enjoyed my trips out there. I hope you all continue to do so, but be careful.

About 20 miles of lane splitting on the 5 and 405 was kinda intense. First time for any real lane splitting for me. Most drivers gaves us plenty room but not all!

I've had the opportunity to ride through southern CA a couple of times. With a bike equipped with saddlebags, I was always a bit nervous with the idea of lane splitting when I was as "wide" as I was.

Having lived in SoCal for 30 years (that's where I cut my riding teeth) the key to lane splitting is this - if your mirrors clear, the rest of the bike will. I'm pretty sure that 'stock' mirrors on a bike are the widest place. I sure do miss riding there; so many great memories.

That would be a good guideline for sure.

As more states consider lane splitting/filtering/etc., I suppose we should be aiming at developing an appropriate comfort level to deal with it.

I was easing along gingerly when I heard an air horn behind me and saw a GS rider following me. After a couple more blasts from the horn I eased into a gap in the left lane and he swooped by. He had on a black uniform and I realised he was a LEO. He gave me a friendly wave and blasted off down the the lane divider. I took off in full pursuit and we made great time. :trink39:

That's funny. When I rode in CA, I was working in Glendale and attending night classes at Cal State LA - about a 20 mile ride. At the time I rode a Kawasaki Spectre 1100, which was very much like the Kawi Police bikes, but shaft drive. I'd get in heavy traffic, turn on my hazard lights, and the cars would spilt apart like the Red Sea for Moses. It was great!!

This is pretty cool. I uploaded my track to gpsvisualizer and got this HTML map. Ignore the google api key message and select open topo or any non google map up at the upper right corner
https://www.barrowcreek.com/Cal2022TracksMap.html (https://www.barrowcreek.com/Cal2022TracksMap.html)

OK, so I noticed the map quit displaying. Further reading on the gpsvisualizer site says the display is only TEMPORARY!
Here is a screenshot of what it looked like:

Looks like a very cool trip. I did a little riding in SoCal area when I went out once and was attending races with my brothers. A local ride or two to get comfortable with the bike I was borrowing. Didn't ride any of the great roads I was familiar with from stories of family and friends (Angeles Crest, Mulholland) but did enjoy some fun stuff including a short blast along the beach. Would like to go back some day...

As far as the roads, I remember the first time I took my brother Richard on VA 16 near Hungry Mother Park, and he said it was as good as anything he had ridden back in CA. In a couple of weeks I'll get to see what he thinks of Deal's Gap, Cherahola and the other fun roads of that area.

I look forward to seeing you both in Sparta, too! I'll admit to being a bit spoiled...Deal's Gap and the Cherohala could be everyday rides for me. But with so many other cool roads that don't have nicknames and such, I just point my nose in a direction and start having fun.

See you in about 10 days Geoffrey.

I will be looking for some tips on the roads we should ride while in the area of the Gap, we plan to have 3 days. It has been a while since I've been there, but these are on my must ride list, probably some of them multiple times US129, NC28, Cherohala, Foothills Parkway. I remember a loop from Helen that we did, which included TN68 south into GA.

I also use the motorcycleroads.com web site when looking for good roads, but know that with people like you, Pippen, Brick and others that isn't as useful.

Steve,
IMHO NC 28 south off of NC 19 down to Franklin, NC is part of the Moonshiner Highway and it has been recently repaved and is Awesome!!
My recommendation.

Thank you Brick.  I recall riding that road, I think it was the piece south of US74 (OK that's the NC19 you mentioned) that was really twisty. Something we would do while at Helen rally. I also recall visiting Cashiers and Highlands in  NC, and some waterfall in that area (that you can drive under). Not sure if those all fit, with a home base of Robbinsville.

You used to be able to drive under Bridal Veil Falls, but it's sort of blocked off these days. You could still do it, but others might frown when you rode around the barriers. NC28 between US19/US74 and Franklin gets a thumbs up from me too. Coming out of the other end of Franklin is the Wayah Road...another spectacular twisty road. Sweet!

Thanks Geoffrey, Bridal Veil Falls, I thought that was the name (one of many using that).

I thought I saw that Wayah Road name and it sounded familiar. Not sure I ever did it, but its on the list and probably works great as a return route from Franklin heading back to Robbinsville.

PS  Sorry to clutter this thread with my stuff....
