Though I've maintained my MSTA (formerly HSTA) membership, I haven't been active (attended any events) for quite awhile. Just bought a new bike (Yamaha FJ-09) and the juices are definitely flowing to get out and ride more. Looking forward to reconnecting and putting on a lot more miles. Hope to meet many of you on the road.

And welcome back into the fray Steve. I see you live in San Diego, so there should be no issue with getting out and riding. On the other hand, I'm in Michigan and soon it will be time to put up the bike for the winter. :(
-
Thanks for the welcome back! :^) I lived in Chicago for @10 years before moving to CA. I know exactly what you mean, and I do appreciate the difference in riding seasons! Ride Safe!

Welcome back! Hope to meet you at a MSTA event soon. -JEP-

Hi Steve! Welcome back! I love your choice of new bikes. I'm trying to figure a way to put one of those in my garage too!
I think you should put on a MSTA event and invite us all out there. I would love to ride there some more.
-
Brick....I like the way you think.
Steve..welcome back to the fray. I love your choice in new bikes. Hope to see it in person sometime.
-
Steve,
I test rode an FJ-09 a couple of weeks back. I've never bought a new bike and don't have room for one now, but I've been thinking about which bikes in the fleet I'd part company with to make room for one of these. I really liked it.

Steve,
Welcome back. we're glad to have you

I rented one and rode it 20 days and 5234 kilometers through the Alps last July. I loved it!(https://ridemsta.com/mstaforums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F02%2F64d0cd49c675cde1451bf97f184a6930.jpg&hash=59476f58321ccea13d4465975908920986b8fac3)

Thanks for all of the responses! I'm feeling very welcome! :^)
I am really enjoying the FJ-09! I was looking for something Sport-Touring capable but lighter and more "Sport" than the ST1100. It definitely fills that bill! Lots of fun and, once I get the seat sorted out (some people like it but it starts eating my butt after 100+ miles) it will be perfect for getting back into some nice cross-country running and still being able to enjoy the twisties. Being a new model not everyone has their seat offering out yet. Corbin does but I'm waiting to see what Sargent does before making a choice. Sargent should have their seat available after the first of the year.
I'm looking forward to seeing you guys at an upcoming event. I looked at next years STAR in Vermont, but a friend of mine is really twisting my arm to do a trip to Alaska at the same time. So I'll try and catch one or more of the other regional gatherings. I can't find the CA MSTA group! Are they still active?
-
At one time CA was very active but a few of the doers pass on and so it seems has the MSTA in CA. Having lived in Ohio during my working years I always wanted to attend a CA event. But like I said I was working. Now that I'm retired and living in Western NC there are no CA MSTA official events. Leonard Lloyd still rides a lot and does put out a newsletter. There are a few more that ride but not much organization. I wish there was more out there.

"If you build it, they will come".....:)
Seriously....I think that if someone tried having a "just for fun" event is so-cal, and gave enough pre-notice and publicity beforehand, they would get a pretty good crowd to show up. Some people might even be willing to travel a long way to get the opportunity to ride in that area of the country with people that know the area well.
-
You're exactly right Pat! Welcome back to a long term member. I in no way want to pressure you, but with a little work, and you would receive plenty of help, a just for fun event in your area would probably literally bring the MSTA to you! I'm from eastern VA., and have ridden across the country several times. At almost 70, I'm ready to do this one more time. All I need is an opportunity! Just say no, if you're not up to it now, or contact me on this forum if you'd even like to discuss it. We need a foothold in your area to help the MSTA rise from the dead in your area. If you aren't prepared for this, I totally understand, and hope to meet you somewhere at another rally. Take care, Syd Mayes:-)

Yep, you're right Pat, and I'll continue to pile them on as quick as I can!!!

Well who knows, I might be up for helping out with getting something together next season. I did do some searching around and see that John Button is still active. I did a few rides that he organized years ago when I still lived in N.CA. Looks like he planned a Paso Robles Ride for this past March (check out http://www.buttonhome.org/ (http://www.buttonhome.org/) ). Didn't see a ride report so don't know for sure what happened with that one, but did find an email from Leonard, which I apparently missed, about a ride planned for September. I'll see if I can connect with them and get updated re: what's happening. Also just found that the CalMSTA is using Micapeak.Com as a list server for their communications (http://micapeak.com/mailman/listinfo/calmsta (http://micapeak.com/mailman/listinfo/calmsta)), and I just subscribed to it to see what I could find. This could get interesting! :^)

Excellent! Keep us over here informed!

Welcome back. I just joined last year and am loving it! I'm in IL now and understand the seasons... Agree with Brick... Ride safe!

I'm in the young section of this club at 50. Many of the guys I ride with in Ohio are 60-70, a few others are early 50s. We ain't getting younger. And I hope I can still ride at 70 like many in the club do.
As for an event in SoCal, that would be cool. Have only ridden there a little when visiting my brothers to ride to Lagua for MotoGP.

Yeah, SoCal would be a blast for a STAR. And depending where they ride, I'd probably be able to lead a group if I go, having lived in the area for about 30 years, and ridden quite a few of the good roads out that way.
-
If they had STAR in So Cal, I wouldn't go. Living in that mess since I was a kid made me want to move away which I did in 1990. They've added lots of new freeways since that time but now it seems all of them are just as congested as was the old 405 and 101. Because of the heavy traffic flow 24/7 it makes repair/repaving difficult-to-impossible so most of the roads are in truly terrible condition.

LA was the site of my last crash...last in that it was the most recent (8 years ago) AND last in that I hope that I won't be having another crash. I'd probably go back and find that stupid interstate interchange just to see it again and try to learn a little more from the previous experience.
It's a pretty long haul from this side of Big Muddy, so I don't know if I'd call it my local riding area. While I've been through parts of California during two Iron Butt Rallies and a 3-Flags Classic, I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface of places to see and go. I suspect I could take an entire summer doing nothing but riding there and still barely scratch it. Maybe an event there is all the impetus I need to take a meandering ride back that way.
-
Yeah but Tosh we wouldn't be riding on the freeways.

There are some nice rides in So Cal - Rim of the World Hwy, Ortega Hwy, etc - but they all involve getting there using either the freeway or surface streets both of which are heavily traveled and often gridlocked. Northern CA, north of San Francisco, is completely different with low population density, similar to rural Oregon, and lots of open land. It also has very few east-west roads so routes will be very long. Those of you who went to STAR in Mammoth Lakes can attest to that.
-
I didn't get to go to Mammoth Lakes...are the routes from that event still floating around in someone's files?
-
I did go to Mammoth Lakes it was great and not crowded like down there. But boy was it dry! Yes dry!
