Stuffing the raffle tickets was the only time I ever got to show up on Friday for an event that was on Saturday. Yes, I hate crowds and long lines.   And I still don't understand why Bill made such a fuss about it.  You'd think he had to work for a living!

Humm, No tickets in the mail----Double the price of the ticket----On line sales only except at STAR----A high dollar bike----A 1 1/2 model year old bike.
Good breaking even on this one.

Whoa... After "understanding" all the changes this year on a last year bike AND the increased price AND no tickets mailed... while I will buy some ticket... I wish you lots of luck on breaking even on this bike. Did you look at the numbers on the 2008 FJR raffle bike?

While I wholeheartedly support the EC in making difficult decisions as I have been there, I must agree with with Jon and Brick.  I believe it is going to be a huge uphill battle to meet the goals of the raffle bike.  You are forcing members to be proactive and use electronic means which is not a strong suit of this organization or fill out the forms and send them in plus double the price.  Wish you lots of luck.

I have always bought raffle tickets but have never used the ones mailed to me. I just use the STAR registration form. I end up pitching the mailed tickets in the trash which is a shame as I know there is a lot of effort that goes into doing the mail out not to mention the expense of printing and postage. As to the price increase, seems to me if sales drop by half we come out the same dollars in hand.
Yes this is change and I know this is upsetting to some but personally I think it's worth a try over doing the old way because that's how we've always done it. Either way somebody will get to say I told you so. My 2-cents.-JEP-

I believe that the 2015 model differs from the 2014 only in color.  Just my opinion, but the 2014 red is cooler than the black or metallic gray offered in 2015.
Title: Re: 2015 MSTA Raffle Bike Announcement!

Manufacturers have to change colors to keep sales stimulated.  Staying with the same colors usually results in fewer people coming to look at the new model.  It's just a way of life.

The MSRP listed is $16,890, so that indicates it is the ES model (electronic suspension). If that is correct, you may want to add that to the description as that is quite a step up from the standard model.

It's the standard model
To answer some of the questions that been asked. We decided to go with a Sport Touring bike next year(2014 FJR 1300), first time since 2008. Some reasons why:
1. New central location-high attendance 450-500-high number of raffle tickets sold
2. Money saved from not mailing and printing tickets-on average over $2,000(at the old ticket price of $5 we had to sell 400 tickets just to pay for that expense. Now that money can go to raffling a premium sport touring bike.
3. By buying raffle tickets at $8 or $10, you get a chance to win a great bike, and you support your club.
4. Past years numbers:
2012                                      2013                                          2014
Bike rev-$14,800                   Bike rev-$15,500                       Bike rev-$13,500
P&H-$1,850                           P&H-$2,052                               P&H-$2,200
Net Inc-$3,175                      Net Inc-$5,611                          Bike rev-$3,500

I hope this gives all members an insight on why the EC went in this direction.

Thanks for that info, Dennis.

The standard model is still a great bike, but the MSRP is $15890 for that model, so you might want to correct the ad. We don't know yet what incentives Yamaha will have starting Jan 1, but right now dealers get an additional $1500 rebate for 2014 FJR1300's.

EDIT: I no longer see MSRP listed.

Nevermind............................

Are there any numbers on how many of the mailed tickets were purchased and how many were purchased at STAR each year?

 I don't have that information
Maybe Tim Macy will have it

Good to see some of the info that went into making the decision. I could see the scrapping of ticket mailing saving a bunch, and that a lot of tickets had to be sold just to cover that. So that seemed to make some sense.

As for the other changes, I think many send in the tickets the get mailed to them, would be interesting to see numbers. I agree that some of those will otherwise not buy tickets (they'd have to see the info in STAReview, a couple issues behind so I don't know if its appeared yet and then take action to order tickets.)

Toss in the higher price and I could see less overall revenue from ticket sales (but still $2000 saved without mailing). Not saying they made the wrong decision, just that I'm not sure it will work out. Will be interesting to hear something about the numbers afterward (hopefully in STAReview for all to see, not just at STAR in a meeting or on the forum/FB).

I think that those that bought tickets in the past, will continue to buy tickets, for the most part.  Of course, those are those who still refuse to do any Internet commerce, and won't put in the small effort needed to order tickets.  Hopefully many of those will attend STAR and purchase tickets there.

For me, I have no problem with using the Internet to purchase products and have already gotten mine purchased. I spent what I normally would have.  I got less chances than in the past, but I think this will be the norm for most members, so it will all work out fine.

Now...who do I blame when I don't win this darn thing?   :).   LOL

It would be interesting to know what percentage of our members register for STAR online verses mailing in their registration form. That might be a good indicator for pre-sale bike raffle tickets. -JEP-

Do we know what sort of percentage is typically sold at the STAR event?  I normally purchase an extra ticket or two there.

I wonder if we have any purchase history on members who almost always buy some of the tickets they receive in the mail?   It's possible to over-analyze this to death so let's just go with what the EC has decided!   :D

Unforunately I have no numbers as to what we sold.  I just do a rough count and mail it all to Tim for a real count.  If memory serves the three years I've been the raffle guy we would be pushing 10Kish pre STAR.  At the event the sales are coming pretty fast so I don't get a very accuate count but its seems like its at least in the 5k range.
Title: Re: 2015 MSTA Raffle Bike Announcement!

Just a note on the decision to increase the price per ticket. We assumed that most members who buy tickets buy more than one and have a certain budget for the tickets. For example, I usually spend $40 for tickets, so now I'll get 4 or 5 tickets instead of 8. We think that the gross revenue will be about the same, if not better, as previous years but the number of tickets sold will probably be less which means that your odds of winning will be roughly the same. 3k tickets sold at $5 ea or 1.5k sold at $10 ea gives us the same revenue and the same odds of winning, again assuming that each member spends about the same amount as in previous years.  We also think that the FJR as the prize will provide the incentive to boost sales to offset what we'd lose from not having a mass mailing, plus we'll also be ahead $2k from the postage saved.

Just because "it's always been done this way" isn't justification enough to not try something different. If it were, we wouldn't have the horseless carriage, electricity, indoor plumbing or the internet and smartphones.

I guess we'll see what happens. Not the end of the world if it doesn't pan out, and as Jim mentioned earlier, at the end of the day someone will be able to say, "I told you so."

Sounds like logical thinking, Choon. Thanks for that.

Just one question. What's this "indoor plumbing" you speak of? When did they start that?

Choon, I'm no math whiz, as I'll leave that to two of our children that teach that subject. It seems in the example you gave you are talking ratios, rather than chances of winning. If there are 1.5k tickets sold, my chances of winning are 1 in 1,500, and correspondingly, with 3k sold, my chances are 1 in 3k. Therefore selling fewer tickets, yet creating the same revenue, actually enhances the members chances of being a winner, if they buy the customary number of tickets! Syd :)

Syd, you're absolutely right if you bought the same number of tickets as in previous years that your chances of winning will probably double, but you also spent twice as much as you previously did. The assumption that we went on is that most folks will spend about the same amount of money this year as in previous years, so they'll get half as many tickets. And since there'll be fewer tickets overall, the odds of winning will remain roughly the same. In my example, previously my odds were 8 out of 3000. Now my odds are 4 out of 1500. That's the same odds for the same amount of money spent.

Is that a good assumption? We think it's a reasonable one. Of course there'll be those who are totally turned off at having to pay twice as much for a ticket and decide not to buy any, and there'll be some who'll buy the same number of tickets as in previous years, the price notwithstanding.

Choon good points all around. I hadn't thought about the angle of people spending the same amount on tickets.

The chance of winning makes sense too.

I won't mind adding an FJR to the garage after winning it. It will go well with the Honda CBR300 that I'll win at my local Ride For Kids event this year. The only downside will be needing a bigger garage, but it's a small price to pay.

I may be asking this in the wrong thread - but here goes...

Does anyone know if there will be the Aerostich giveaway to a STAR attendee as in past years?  If so, is this connected to the raffle bike ticket you purchased, or the STAR wrist band number?  I can't recall.

The Aerostich is typically attached to the bike raffle but that has not been confirmed for this year yet.

If you don't want the raffle bike, the aerostich suit isn't a bad investment for your $8 or $10 ticket.
In the past you had to be present to win the suit (not the case for the bike).
Lucky for me at Taos, they called several names before they called mine.
I've never had gear that really fit, and custom made to fit by aerostich, I've worn it for several years now and it still isn't even broken in yet.
I'll always buy tickets, even if the odds of winning something again are remote, it's part of the fun of Star.

I know we have had a member (maybe more members?) win the raffle bike more than once.
That tells me that the raffle is a very small pool and your odds of winning are pretty darn good relative to other raffles! -JEP-

If you don't want the raffle bike,

If you don't want the raffle bike, but still win it, sell it! Very simple. In 1996 I won a Suzuki Bandit in a AMA raffle. Didn't want it, but sold it easily and took a trip to Australia with the funds from that sale.

If you don't want to go thru the trouble of selling it, I'll do it for you (for a % of course) :-)

Well those be prizes that non attendees can win? My understanding from all past drawings from the bike raffle tickets was only the bike could be won without being in attendance, others were not eligible. (And in attendance means present in the room during the banquet when they are announced, not registered for STAR but didn't show up, went home early, or asleep in your room.)

Not complaining, just stating the facts as I know them.

A little birdie told me that the club did turn a profit on this year's raffle, though it seems not as much as in previous years. Considering all the changes that were made to the process and choice of a high ticket bike, I think the club did OK. And to see the happy faces of David and Tammy Moss when they won the bike at STAR, I'd say neither one cared that it was a previous year's model.

Well done to all who were involved in pulling it off.

I might be wrong, but I don't think there were there any changes between the 2014 and 2015 models. Yeah, it might have been a 2014 model officially, but functionally, it was as new as they come.

Not to mention the extended warranty that was included...nice!  I'd have been real happy to win it.  Heck, I would've been happy to win anything!  But I still had a great time.

Just an update on the raffle bike proceeds -

And the results are in -
It was a great money-maker for the club, bringing in a nice profit of over $ 2,600.
Even with the new ticket prices, ticket purchases changes and much nicer high-end motorcycle !!

Thanks to everyone for purchasing - and the EC for all their hard work!

Just curious, how many tickets were sold and how does that number compare with last year's?
