Bags & liners for BMW F800 GT
« on: July 13, 2016, 10:07:46 AM »
Greetings one and all. I won the 2016 MSTA Raffle Bike at STAR in VT and am loving it. I've always lived on a shoestring budget and prices new for bags and liners are big $$$. So, if anyone knows of someone selling a set of bags or liners let me know. I read somewhere (gotta research again) that bags from some other models of BMW are interchangeable to the F800. If / when I find this information again, I'll post an update here. Bags from previous years of the same model likely to fit right on too. Thanks for any help. 8)

I have no idea if the bags are the same but I have a friend here in Western NC who has crashed a K1200 I think a 2008. I just sent him a note to see if the right bag is available. I know he posted that the left hand bag was toast!

I'll let you know what I hear back.

Rich - you'll soon discover that BMW being short for Break-My-Wallet isn't too far off base. :-)

Break My Wallet ....or....Bring More Wampum!....or...Big Money Waster!

Funny, but I really enjoyed my '09 GS...not any real problems with it in 55k miles.
I liked it enough that I traded it in on a '15 R1200GSA, and didnt really consider other brands.  Of course it helps that i have a great dealer just 2 miles from my house.

As for bags, I believe that RKA also makes liners for BMWs.

The following is a url for Givi USA, which has mounts for bags and top case. I don't know if it saves you anything or not? As for the top case and side  bags, Ebay, JC whitney and others sell bags that will fit the givi racks at a fraction of the real thing. They aren't as durable, but work fine. There is also Ebay and Craigs List. Try Searchtempest.com to find all Craigs List listings nationwide, filtered by location. The BMW dealers also sometimes have used bags, but they hesitate to tell you about them. If they are convinced you aren't a prospect for new ones, they might mention the used ones. Good luck, Syd :)

A couple of years ago, I bought a wonderful bag liner for my Givi E-45 from Cee Bailey for a pretty reasonable price.

I know Richard has already ordered a Givi Monokey topcase hardware kit to use his Givi top case (?E460  that he had recently bought and mounted to the VFR) on the BMW. Since the raffle bike came with the BMW saddlebag mounting hardware that may make theirs a better option, instead of buying new mounting hardware (and possible removing the BMW stuff). But I'm sure he'll look for a good deal on any and all saddle bags that might work. Maybe if he goes with a different option than BMW that mounting hardware can be removed and sold.

All that will beat the last minute luggage setup we used to get home from STAR in VT, which was strapping his duffel like dry bag and tank bag to the back seat and rack, while moving other stuff of his into my bags and using the Givi top case liner as an additional bag on the back seat of my Sprint (adding to a full set of top case and saddle bag). Good thing we both had various bungee cords to use.

My experience with bag liners was model specific ones (especially for European bikes like my Triumph Sprint) were pretty expensive, so I found something close and they've worked well. RKA (to me anyway) = premium price for a product that has declined in quality. Having to pay for a raincover that barely stops a light mist from making the tank bag wet seems pretty unreasonable.

Yes, BMW stuff is expensive, I think he learned that getting first service done where an oil change was over $200. (But then I think all of us who do those at home would find them to be very expensive at a dealer, especially if you don't use the high priced OEM oil and filters.)

I called my friends at Morton's BMW in Fredericksburg, Va., and while they didn't have used bags, they say that's a frequent request. She refers people to the various BMW forums, where members regularly have bags and other items for sale. :)

I hear you Tosh. I'm just hoping to find it cheaper if I can. New is always more costly.

Thanks Syd, Tosh, Quint and others for your offerings. As my brother Steve pointed out, the bike came with BMW mounting hardware for the bags, so that is why I'm looking for that first. I haven't looked at much others, and somehow don't think buying brackets plus bags from another source and then having to remove what's on the bike is a real savings. Plus, I really don't have the room for bike disassembly. But, will continue to search. I have to look at some of the forums more, as I read on one that several other models have same type of mounting for bags, so they should clip right on so to speak.

As for the BMW costs, hey I really can't complain. I never expected to be able to afford to purchase a BMW, but since it was basically free, I can afford the add-ons. And hey, Christmas is right around the corner friends - hint, hint.  ;D

Theses bags have been around for many years. I had them for two BMW's. Well made, and they fit. Still use a set just for general luggage and hauling things around in the cars.

Thanks Steve. Nothing on the site was F800 GT specific, but have a feeling others would work. Bag liners I'm finding many sources for - it's the darn hard case bags which are giving me fits. I really don't want to spend $1000 if I can avoid it. I know, I know, Bring More Wampum..............but I'm frugal by nature and necessity.
