Title: Traveling from Boston area to Detroit
Post by: Brick on July 07, 2016, 08:23:33 pm
I'm riding back from STAR 2016 to Quebec to Nova Scotia and Cabot Trail. As it turns out I need to be in Grosse Point Woods on late Tuesday for family.
Starting Saturday AM will head west. I lost all my maps... I think in Vermont?? I have my laptop and can make routes. I've never ridden east to west across PA or NY and thought perhaps you who have could give me some tips??
I'm unsure if I should go into Canada at Buffalo and to Detroit that way or across Ohio in that way?
Oh yea I might need a new rear tire at least before I leave the Detroit area to head for home in Western North Carolina. I'm currently running Avon Roadrunners on my Yamaha Super Tenere. It's a 150/70 - 17.

Only suggestion I can make is IF you plan on using the highway across NY...use the southern Tier expressway (I-86) and avoid Rochester and Buffalo.  Very little traffic and very scenic.

I have Saturday, Sunday and Monday and well part of Tuesday to get there so I hope to avoid the interstate highways.

Brick, if you pick the southern rt. take a look at Rt. 6, With a stop in Wellsboro, PA. Good old road from the past, And Wellsboro is a great little town!

Brick,

We drove by car (and trailer) to Vermont to get Richard's VFR from the shop, I-86 as Pat suggested is a good scenic interstate route without a lot of traffic. We also traveled US6 across much of PA (almost all 2 lane), connecting with US62 at Warren PA and west to the Ohio border from that. US 6 was a full day ride (400 miles from Akron) to Sayre PA (near Binghamton). There was one little detour on US6, otherwise it is in good shape. I could also recommend some other back roads off US6 (141 was one good one) that we rode coming home.  We rode PA666 through the forest in the western part of the state, would be a good road but had lots of recent chip-n-seal, some of it still fresh gravel.

Once you get to NE Ohio there isn't much cross the state that is interesting, so the toll road may be your best bet. If not I'd look at roads like US30, US20, etc.  Ohio 2 hugs the lake, but also has lots of towns and you deal with weekend lake traffic (Cedary Point too).

I'll be around much of the weekend, have good mapping skills and know some of the area. If you want to call me my cell# is in the blue book, if you're not carrying it send me a PM or email me stevegrab@aol.com

Another option might be to stay in Canada, and come into Michigan from Windsor, would probably be shorter but don't know much about the roads there.

Steve,
Thanks for the great replies!
I spoke with my sister Diana today and so now I will not be driving to Detroit now after all. I'm going to try to get a tire here in the Boston area tomorrow then start for home.
Thanks again for the input.
