Yamaha RD125 longshot
« on: October 28, 2016, 12:16:12 am »
A few months ago a 1975 Yamaha RD125 (parallel twin 2-stroke) came to live in my garage. It turned out to be in really nice condition having been stored by the previous owner in a nice dry storage shed. It needed only an afternoon's rubbing to really become the eye catcher I'd hoped. So that takes care of the cosmetics.
The mechanical aspect was a little different story. The gas tank had some serious rust, but even that issue has been addressed with a nice thick coating of epoxy tank liner by Caswell. With a little care and feeding from a friend that's a real mechanic, even the mechanical aspects were addressed. I've been putting a few miles on it here and there, and it's a pretty cool little bike.

And now the bad...I realized it was loud as heck, and I've come to realize the previous owner removed the exhaust baffles (and are apparently long gone). I'm sort of into quiet, so I've been looking for a set of baffles. Ebay has been a bust so far, and OEM baffles have apparently been unavailable for a BUNCH of years.

Does anyone have a line on such a thing?

Have you looked under other old models? That silencer was probably used on several different Yamahas in that era. I am searching for parts for my 1974 TY250 and finding a lot of vintage Yamaha vendors but parts availability is hit and miss

I've sent a message to Speed and Sport
http://store.speedandsportinc.com/
which claims to have the world's largest inventory of Yamaha NOS parts. According to their web site, they don't have the baffles by themselves, but they do have a set of used pipes and a set of NOS mufflers. I'm waiting to find out if either of those includes the baffles.
