Thankful For The STAReview

It's been busy for me lately, and I just had a chance to sit down and read STAReview Vol. 35 No. 6 from front to back. What a wonderful job Nick Zarras does as managing editor of our magazine! There are professional publications out there that struggle to reach the level of proficiency and professional expertise that Nick and staff have reached with our little MSTA publication. From the paper to the colors to the editing to the source of information and product reviews, this is a quality publication. I can't imagine how much time the staff spends editing, trying to pull stories out of the membership, and perfecting the finished product. It has to be a labor of love! The fact that I finally got up off my ass, and wrote a couple of articles in this issue has nothing to do with this post.   The reviews of the Big Lynn Lodge and Mail Pouch events were very well written, and the reviews of the Zero and one of my favorites, the FZ-07, were very helpful. Many thanks to the staff, and particularly Nick for the blood, sweat, and tears required to produce such a high quality product. Please chip in, and send some articles from your own experiences to Nick. He will work with you in editing, and even do some subtle changes on his own. whatever the end result, rest assurred that it will be very presentable. Hey, after it appears in the STAReview, you will be a published author! There may well be a ticker tape parade!! As with life in general, what you receive is relevant to what you put in. Thanks, Syd

Very nice comments, Syd, and also very true.  Nicky puts tons of hours and effort into every issue, and it shows.  We can be very proud to have such a quality product as the STAReview representing the MSTA.  BIG thanks to Nicky and everyone that contributes time and effort into making it what it is.

As a member longtime member I can tell you that our STAReview has burned out many volunteers over the years. I too have been thinking how good we have it with Nicky! When my volunteer position with the HSTA/MSTA required that I write a monthly article for the STAReview I really struggled both coming up with a subject and then writing it. Then came the begging! Yes begging because my editor Patricia hated editing what I had written. Why, you ask? Well because I would ramble on and add way too many words. Nicky does all this and a lot of it is on his own. We don't show our appreciation enough for the work he puts into this beautiful publication.
A HUGE Thank You Nicky! I hope you continue.

I receive several motorcycle publications and they often arrive on the same day.
StaReview is the one I go to first! It is on par with magazines that cost far more and often offer far less than our own StaReview.

I agree with everyone on this one...Nicky does a Fantastic job of putting together the magazine!  And all the test rides he does and then writes about them in such a professional manner makes for a very good magazine.  As several people commented, please send your articles to Nicky for input and become a published author, and maybe a ticker parade. I think he will accept anything related to motorcycling, just ask him.  Maybe even a rebuild project would be nice.
If he can take my ramblings and turn it into a publishable story, he can do it for anyone.  Suggestion, write your story, let it sit for a day or two, and read it, and make your changes as needed.

A quick note on the writing of articles...especially for those people out there that have never done one and don't know how to start....

Remember the 5 W's

Who ......was involved
What .....did they do
When .....did they do it
Where.... did they do it
Why ......did they do it

Don't worry about being entertaining and witty.  Don't worry about style and great pose.  You can add that if you desire to after getting the basics down.  It can be added at the editing stage..  it can be added in a rewrite.  Like any skill, the more you practice it, the better it will get.  None of us are professional authors or critics so it certainly doesn't need to award worthy writing.  Even the smallest and shortest article has a value and is useful when putting your local/state newsletter and the STAReview together, so don't feel you can't do it just because you don't have a long article to contribute.  Something short and sweet is just fine.

Great tips from Patmo. And I'll add this - write it down (or type it up) while it's fresh in your mind. Then when you actually get to fine tuning the article, you'll relive the experience.
