2018 Touring Bikes

It seems the 2018 Goldwing will have a front suspension similar to the BMW Duolever and will also have a DCT option.  Big question - how much will it weigh?  The Dairy Queen and yard sale crowd won't care.

Other exciting newsis that Kawasaki will replace the already defunct Concours 14 with a supercharged sport touring bike.  Artist's conceptions look similar to an FJR, but Kawai hasn't shown it.  I've read speculation that it could put out 200 hp, or that it could be relatively small and light with a boost to put it in the liter bike power range.  Either way, the Concours 14 had trouble with Euro specs, and the blower will help with fuel efficiency.

If you look up Hossock Suspension, you'll see many of the designs now coming into fruition. 

When did BMW do away with their single lever front suspension?

Well, let's not nit pick but......Yamaha is the only one I know with a "single lever". BMW had a "tele lever" front suspension that had telescopic fork tubes and a coil over shock arrangement.  just saying'  :^)   TM

Oops...I picked the wrong term when I said single lever.

The single lever I referred to was the single control arm near the steering head onto which the shock is attached.   Prior to all the modern coil-over, front suspensions (such as McPherson strut) cars had two control arms on each side as you well remember.  :-)

Since they only make the K1600 now, I didn't realize that it still had the Duolever.  Some R bikes have the Telelever, some don't.

The GW still won't be anything I am interested in, because it will still weighs half-a-ton before I get on it.  since I don't ride 2-up I have no need for a bike so big.

The new retro Kawasaki Z900RS is a different story.  Will it have some power to go with the looks?  Will we see it in the US?

Ok, I took the bait. I googled the Z900RS.......WOW!!! That's a looker. I'm sure it has plenty (more than I can use) performance. What a cool bike. If you look at the many iterations included in the search, there some really cool concepts. We'll see which one we get.
I like some of the Honda CB1100 concepts which look better than what we got to choose from. The one I like the best they don't offer anymore, go figure.  Gee, I which they would ask me first.  :^)  TM

The R1200 RT and R1200 GS BMW's still have the telelever, which also now has electronic suspension adjustments and such. I really like the telelever but it does take a little getting used to since the changes in steering geometry means that turn in when you are leaned over does not significantly alter when inputs are added to the system. Allowing braking into the corner, without fork dive altering camber and rake. I have not done the math, just my seat of the pants input from 8K plus miles on my first telelever bike in the last 6 months.

Now BMW has thrown another flavor of the K1600 into the mix: Grand America.  Basically the K1600 B with a top box. So now there is the K1600 GT, GTL, GTLE, B and B GA.


Yamaha announced the Tracer 900 GT, which brings lots of nice goodies to the now-renamed FJ-09.  I have a 2015 FJ-09 and really like the upgrades they have brought with this: updated suspension w/remote preload rear shock, new windshield and refined body work and seat, quick-shift, and heated grips standard along with CRUISE CONTROL option.


I'm going to have to see if some of these items can be retrofitted to my '15!


Will Honda bring the CB1300, in a couple different styles?


Now Suzuki needs a turbo bagger 'Busa to keep things that much more interesting...
