Who told you that wasn't the case? I DO need new tires on at least one of my bikes almost every month.

Kind of my point, if I lived in that area I'd be out riding those roads regularly burning through tires. I still do 2 sets a season on my main touring bike (Sprint ST now). I think you also use your bike more for commuting and general getting around, mine is almost entirely recreation, rarely commute or running errands, replacing the car to get somewhere.
