We drove by car (and trailer) to Vermont to get Richard's VFR from the shop, I-86 as Pat suggested is a good scenic interstate route without a lot of traffic. We also traveled US6 across much of PA (almost all 2 lane), connecting with US62 at Warren PA and west to the Ohio border from that. US 6 was a full day ride (400 miles from Akron) to Sayre PA (near Binghamton). There was one little detour on US6, otherwise it is in good shape. I could also recommend some other back roads off US6 (141 was one good one) that we rode coming home. We rode PA666 through the forest in the western part of the state, would be a good road but had lots of recent chip-n-seal, some of it still fresh gravel.
Once you get to NE Ohio there isn't much cross the state that is interesting, so the toll road may be your best bet. If not I'd look at roads like US30, US20, etc. Ohio 2 hugs the lake, but also has lots of towns and you deal with weekend lake traffic (Cedary Point too).

Another option might be to stay in Canada, and come into Michigan from Windsor, would probably be shorter but don't know much about the roads there.
