STAR 2014 Dual Sport rides
« on: May 19, 2014, 12:08:23 PM »
I plan on  bringing my DRZ400 to STAR along with my CBR. A do not have a lot of dual sport experience but plan on some routes that will be up to the intermediate range of riding. So mostly the forest roads and some two track stuff.

Route will take us to Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park.
Or something along those lines.

Sunday, Monday or Wednesday ride.

Any interest in joining me?

I've got plans to incorporate some gravel roads into my road routes, and I certainly think you're on the right track. I expect to be involved in the registration process over the weekend, so I'll be squeezing as much riding as possible into Monday-Wednesday. Due to that, I'll probably stay with the standard routes I've modified to see more gravel roads or to do more curvy stuff.

I really like that there is room for lots of riding styles in this club. It feels like home.

Magenta to Cyan around the yellow and back up the magenta is 230 miles round trip from the motel
Yellow is 60 miles if you'd like to shorten the trip.

Anyways there is a teaser.  Most of the other colors are routes for STAR

I'm very interested in this... Tell me more. I am an old fat guy on a 587lb Yamaha Super Tenere. What is the difficult level of this route?

I kind of followed some routes from this site.

http://www.dakotaadventureloop.com/

Then I used the Dirt Bike routeing in Basecamp so it would follow the roads where the tracks from the Adventure Loop would follow trails.

Guys would take big adventure bikes on the Loop but I'm guessing their skill level is greater than mine. Based on satellite views from some of the roads that I check out they are all just dirt roads. Also there are some short cuts, if I wanted to follow off the dirt road, that look like two track that you can clearly see so I'm guessing they would be in a passable state also.

I'll track you down at Star Brick and we can talk further.

I'll be arriving Saturday with Tony Kellen.

I also downloaded a Motor Vehicle Use Map

http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/blackhills/maps-pubs/?cid=STELPRDB5203036

The route follows Roads Open to Highway Legal Vehicles

So I'm guessing we should be OK.
