New bike!
« on: November 27, 2016, 10:02:53 am »
Some people say I am frugal. Well, to be fair, lots of people say I'm cheap. But whatever, yesterday I did something I've only done one other time since starting riding in 1958. I bought a new bike. The last time was 1972 when I traded an BSA 500 for a new Suzuki T500 Titan.

So, yesterday I bought a leftover 2015 DR650 to replace my trusty '99 DR650. Only took 44 years to buy a second new motorcycle. So see, you guys are wrong - I'm not cheap it just takes me a while to make a decision  ;)

How many miles have you racked up on the '99? I know they aren't fragile, but I guess nothing lasts forever.

It's too bad you didn't find a leftover '99 model that the dealership was extremely motivated to move. Except for the BNG, they're either identical or pretty darned close to the 2015 models. Right?

While I've only been riding for 31 years, I have yet to actually purchase a "new" bike. Compared to those of us like myself, you're way ahead of the curve to have now purchased 2 new bikes.

47K. Still runs great.  Never a problem with it but 47K is 47K. I really don't do the sport touring thing any more and I consider this my primary motorcycle... and one that I really like.

Truth is I had a chunk of "toy" money from selling two DR350s and a bunch of parts burning a hole in my pocket and the leftover '15 was too good to pass up.

Sounds good.

For some of the other members of our happy little forum, here's a question...
How many "brand spanking new/not pre-loved" bikes have you had?
Jim's confessed to 2 and that beats me by...2.
What about you?

Jim,

Congrats on the fine looking DR650!  That DR should serve you well on and off pavement! Wow, 1958 when you started riding, I'm a youngster, did not start until 1969!   :)

I helped Jim by buying one of those DR350's so he would have a bit more toy money. I already had one fine DR350, but a fella can always use a spare to loan to visitors that want to join me on a dual sport ride.

Nice Dr650, Jim. "Bout time you turned some of that toy money loose. :-)

OK, I'll answer. I've been riding since about 1984 I believe. Of the 5 bikes I have owned, only bought two brand new bikes in that time. The first was in 1987 I bought a 1984 Kawasaki Spectre 1100 (basically the cop bike of the era, but with shaft drive). Brand new off the dealer floor, it was barely over $3000 out the door. The second was a 1994 VFR750f bought new in 1996. It too was a good deal, and the salesman had me pegged. We talked about the bike for a bit, then I sat on it for while. We talked some more and told him I had to get going but would be in touch. I called the following afternoon to tell him I was gonna do the purchase and he tells me "Oh, I knew that. It's already off the floor in the back getting prepped for delivery." Yet, due to his being distracted by another salesman while doing the paperwork, he quoted me a way low price and I was out the door on that one around $7k I believe.

OH, and I was lucky enough to win a brand new bike, but you've all heard about that!!  8)

I've owned a bunch (pushing 50+ i think)  if you count some of the basket cases i've brought home.  New ones I can remember are

1777 KZ 1000
1982 GW interstate - it was a left over deeply discounted
2007 lifan 80cc dirt bike for my daughter

When it gets good and cold lets list all the motorcycles we have ever owned.  That will be a very interesting list for a lot of folks.

I am SO not worthy.

I've had 20 different bikes and have rented or borrowed a couple of others under some specific circumstances. No "new" bikes though...only used. And generally speaking, I've kept all of the bikes I've purchased until I crashed them into oblivion. I did sell an '85 BMW R80G/S (a big mistake), an '81 Suzuki GS550T (a mistake...it was my first bike, but I may actually be getting it back from the guy to whom I sold it), an '85 BMW R80RT (a big mistake), and a '97 Suzuki GS500e (sold to a good friend who needed a ride). Finally coming to the realization that it was ok to have more than 1 or 2 bikes, I would be hard pressed to part with any of the running bikes now in my garage.

Jim - I'm reading Peter Egan's Leanings III and he has great praise for the DR650 so you're in good company!
