Those "wings" are radar dispersing/absorbing surfaces like those on fighter jets, as you observed. Need some of those on my bike for the "Revenue Enhancement Officers".
Seriously, I imagine they are designed to provide downforce, like a F1 car, etc.
I recently had a chat with a State Trooper here in NE Tennessee on my way to meet Jim Randall for lunch. I was exhilarated to be back in the land of curvy roads, and I was feeling very enthusiastic...not to mention riding an ST1100 that is way too easy to ride at an enthusiastic pace. I can't say that I was impervious to radar (the Trooper told me exactly how fast I was going, and I couldn't dispute it...I was going more than "a few" miles over the posted limit), but I was polite, stopped immediately upon seeing him on my bumper, and told him the absolute truth about everything while being apologetic. I guess it also didn't hurt that I have a good driving record and that I look like an old fart. He wrote me a citation for not having my insurance and registration (I hadn't put it back into my wallet after a trip earlier this summer where I'd cleared unnecessary stuff out), and that was it. And when I went to court with that documentation showing I had all of that not only now, but also prior to the citation, the judge dismissed the whole mess. I carry all that stuff now and I have slowed down a bit. It was as if the Trooper wanted to get compliance rather than just raising revenue, and, I for one, really appreciated it.
I am absolutely sure I dodged not only a bullet, but also a cannon ball. But I have to say it pays to be polite, apologetic, truthful, and so forth.
